"I received your letter of the 17th and will try and write you again. I
have just got over a sick spell. Was sick for 3 weeks with the Bilious
Dysentery. I am so nervous I can hardly write now.
"Mother has sore eyes this morning that pains her very bad. Chuff has
left us and we rented the farm to William Alley. He put out 20 acres
of wheat and cut the clover seed. It did not turn out well. 17 bushel
off 11 acres. I had 218 bushel of wheat off 9 1/4 acres.
"Pete Smith is down sick for present. It has been very hot for 4 weeks
now or more. Too hot to sleep but cooler this morning and windy.
"I tried to sell chestnuts here. There is 2 groceries here. The one
said he would take 2 bushel and give me $3 a bushel and the other bushel
at $2.50, but didn't care for any. So it wouldn't pay to bother with a
couple of bushels. There is so many hickory nuts. Each family has from
2 to 15 bushels gathered. They sell for 60 cts a bushel.
"Uncle John Mock's wife was here yesterday. She says they are all well
in their neighborhood except young John's wife. She is nearly blind
with sore eyes.
"I have not seen Elias for nearly 6 months. He has trouble with Rachel.
She wants to go back to town and Elias says he won't go for the next 5
years.
"I would like to go and see your place if we could leave here. Lavina
and I have been talking often about going to see you but it seems we are
homebound. I am trying to raise money to pay Phoebe Smith this fall and
I will only have about $500 to pay to Mother and that will leave me out
of debt once more if nothing happens. There is nothing wrong only
postal cards rather thin. Allright now. Goodbye. Best wishes to all.
Write soon. Emanuel Fashbaugh
