Subject: {not a subscriber} Land sale and repurchase
Algernon Davis and his wife, Isabel Snoke Davis, sold to Florence Davis
Arnold (his sister) 113 ½ acres in Seward Township for $4,000. This sale was
recorded on 11 February 1902. On the same day Florence Davis Arnold sold
back to Algernon and Isabel the same land for the same price.
Florence and Algernons father, William Davis, purchased the land in 1848
from Josiah B. and Sally Magie. Shortly before Williams death in 1900 he
tried to sell the land to Algernon but his second wife refused to release
her right of dower. After Williams death, a dispute between Algernon and
Williams widow over the land was settled with a payment from Algernon to
Williams second wife and a partition of the land. This resolution took
place in 1901. The 113 ½ acres in question then became indisputably Algernon
s.
Does anyone have any idea as to why the sale and resale took place? Have you
heard of similar sales?
