A little history --
During the late 1980's when Larry and Cynthia Scheuer were doing the
indexing of the censuses for Kosciusko County, we found a "set" of original
census sheets -- not field sheets -- but, in fact, the sheets what were
compiled from the field sheets in the massive amount of county records that
were transferred to the H.S. from the county offices. The book that Jan
discovered in Wisconsin is a publication of the Genealogy Section & the
Scheuers --meaning that we both sell the book. At the time they developed
this publication, they used the "set" of original sheets -- instead of the
National Archives film. The fact that we discovered names that did NOT
APPEAR ON THE MICROFILM COPY, led us to make a special note in the
introduction that clarifies what the original source of this publication is.
Since there were no copiers at the time of the census (1860) ....
persons hand wrote the copies that were to be prepared -- perhaps one for
the county office, one for the state, and one or two for the national census
bureau. It would certainly seem feasible that somewhere along the line,
there would be discrepencies.
If there is anyone who has searched the 1860 N.A. FILM and can not find
their family on the FILM but believes them to be in this county, we can
search the "set" for your "missing" ones. No guarantees, of course.
I
believe that the Scheuer/Genealogy Section publication is fairly accurate to
the original set. The publication sells for $40 plus shipping $6.00. I can
do look-ups if that will help.
Hope this helps -- and if there are more questions -- ask! :>)
