Thanks, Brenda,
I had almost no knowledge of the Civil War connections, but have been in contact with a
descendant of Samuel. He knew that Caleb Shreeve was captured at Chickamauga & died
in Danville. We found the Federal cemetary in Danville, online, which lists him as buried
there.
We've been checking Chickamauga records online (the official Civil War records were
published, including battle reports) & Cornell University library has them online.
A few years ago, someone place an article titled "My Birthday" by Samuel Funk in
the Kosciusko County Historical Assoc.'s quarterly mailing. In it he was remembering
Caleb & Mary Scott, Caleb Shreeve, Isaac, and the Kelly brothers, Louis & Joseph.
(Joseph & Louis were nephews of Mary Jane Mercy's husband, Cyrus McCloughan who
lived near the McCloughans & Scotts.)
I saw that Joseph was captured, then paroled, at Champion Hill, during the Vicksburg
campaign.
