My Heeter family moved from Montgomery county Ohio to Wabash county,
Indiana and then spread out to Fulton and Kosciusko. The Heeter Family
letters compiled by Lester Binnie are some the best family documentation
I have ever seen. I consider it a gift from God that I am able to know
the thoughts of my ancestors in such detail. The question, Why is never
clearly answered except by inference.
The family farm of 80 acres could no longer support the second or third
generation.
The area was totally settled.
I am certain this does not apply to any of our families but some had
feuds.
Good friends moved on and wrote of warmer winters, larger fish, better
crops etc.
War. Poverty. Starvation. Natural catastrophe. Scandals.
I asked the same type of question to another genealogist. The answer he
gave was that we will never know why anything happened but that we can
get clues from correspondence and history. Malcolm Gladwell in his
book, The Tipping Point, talks about the magic of 150. When a family,
community or town grew larger than 150 they sometimes split into smaller
and more humanly managed groups of less than 150. I think with the
natural growth of families prior to the Industrial age this would be a
natural occurrence.
Good luck. Thinking about why is a good thing to do on a cold winters
day when you have hit a brick wall.

I'm not sure about that particular area of land but I
do know that my German ancestors did seem to travel in
bunches to different locations with no apparent
explanation. This could be why they were moving
around. They started in Wisconsin and then moved to
Pulaski and then Tippecanoe Counties in Indiana.

Subject: Why Move?
Can anyone tell me why my Great Grandfather, Jacob
Sidney Emmert, would have moved from Kosciusko Co,
IN. to Lawrence Co, TN. in the early 1800's.
The story was told to me, by our local Lawrence Co.
Archives Director, that there was lands procured by
Germany throughout this area. For those desiring to
make a move into an area where other Germans lived,
they could do so.
Can anyone add further to this story?
Thanks,
Randall Hughes
