This sounds familiar, but my 74 year old memory just can't track it down with
exact details. Jim Hartline, born and raised Franklin Twp, Tuscarawas,

Okay, here is a new one on me. I just talked to my mom tonight who is
in her
80's. She has been writing a short bio of herself. She grew up in Kosciusko
Co. She told me tonight she had forgotten to write about something and
wonder if I would insert in as I type out her hand written report.
As a small child say about three or four years old her mother cut some
material such as a shirt into a square and doubled it a couple time until it
was about 2 X 2 inches square then sewed it around the edges leaving one
side open. She then put something inside the pouch and sewed the top closed.
She then used some material and made strings that was long enough to tie
around the neck. Mom said she then tied it around mom's neck and she had to
wear it all the time taking it off for her bath. This was I guess like the
medicine bags you heard indians talk about. She said it smelled terrible.
She said she thought that ever so often grandma would make a new one or
refill the old one but she couldn't really remember. She didn't know about
the spelling but sounded it out and this is what it sounded like.
ASS-I-FIT-I-TY or something like that.
Anyone else ever heard of it and if so I'd like to hear more about the
history of it. Mom said it must of been a family thing because her
grandparents didn't seem to think it was anything bad or out of place. Her
brother also remembered when asked and he turned his nose up when he
answered.
