Hello list,
I have a hard time imagining what the U.S. looked like during pre-1800
days. I recently found a wonderful map that helps me see it in my "mind's
eye" so much easier. It might help you too.
Look for a National Geographic magazine dated SEPTEMBER 1987. The map
that accompanied that issue is called "The Territorial Growth of the United
States and shows a large map and several smaller ones.
The largest map is titled "A New and correct MAP of the United States of
North America ..... 1783. The smaller maps are titled & dated:
Europe Claims North America ca 1750
A New Nation on Stage 1787
Expanding west of the Mississippi 1803
Coming of Age 1821
Coast to Coast 1850
The Union Holds
1877
The Fifty States today 1987
A Broader View 1987
On the opposite side, is the more common N.G. detailed U.S. map.
I found my copy of the map in a used book store -- they may not
necessarily sell National Georgraphics, but usually they have a box or two
of the N.G. maps for sale.
Now when someone says "Virginia in the late 1780's" I can VISUALIZE
Virginia stretching west to the Mississippi River.
Hope you can find one -- it's a good tool!
