I recently learned of the resource known as "The Supplemental
Schedules 1-7: Defective, Dependent and Delinquent Classes" of
the 1880 Census. The 1880 census year was the only time these
schedules were part of the census process. Evidently, there was
a growing interest in health and social reform.
The federal population schedules enumerated individuals who were
classified as "insane" or "idiots" (and there is a difference),
those in prisons, those deaf and mute, blind, homeless children,
and paupers and indigents.
I was told most/some genealogists are unaware the census takers
in 1880 were required, after they had enumerated an individual
who fell into one of these classifications, to then go to one of
the 7 schedules set aside for these categories and ask
additional, probing questions of these individuals, if they were
capable of answering.
I am curious if the Schedules are available for Kosciusko
County? Or, has anyone seen them in any other state. Please
email me personally, I do have some additional information
concerning the type of questions asked of those falling into the
various classifications.
