Hi Janet,
Yes, divorce information is always helpful in tracking some of these
families! I would like to let you know that on our Genealogy Section
publication list we have some of the divorces in lists - along with
marriages.
In the series of books that Marjorie Nye -Applications for Marriages,
she included listings of divorces.
Here's a summary:
Applications for Marriage - Nov. 1881 - April 1892 (NO divorces listed)
Applications for Marriage -April 1892 to 1903, she listed divorces at the
beginning of each "letter". A sample entry reads (at the beginning of the
K's "Kilander, Della divorces Frank 4-8-1890." or "Kern, Eliza
(Sharp)
divorces Jerome B. 6-20-1881. Had married 3-24-1860. Jerome B then
marries Sarah ___ on 4-14-1885 and on 5-18-1885. She had married Ephraim
Beble 5-24-1867. (just an example of some of the added info on some of the
listings.)
Applications for Marriages -1903-1912 Divorces listed at the beginning of
the letters. Most of the listing just names & dates.
Applications for Marriages 1913-1922 Divorces listed at the beginning of
the letters, some additional info on some of the listings -especially info
about women taking back their maiden names.
(The Scantlen books -Marriages from 1923 on don't list divorces. I'm not
sure how Marge developed these listings... I THINK that she had compiled a
list from the county order books --long before she did the index to the
marriage applications, and thought that the two should go together, so she
included the divorce listings in with the marriages. That is strictly a
supposition on my part.)
The Genealogy Sections sells these books for $15.00 each... if you are
interested. (There's a link on the Kosciusko GenWeb page for the order form
...and the listing of publications.
Hope this helps some!!
Marge

Subject: [INKOSCIU] Divorce!
| In the Jan 8, 1873 issue of the Columbia City Post was the following:
|
| "We learn, for an indisputable fact, that in Kosciusko county they have
nine applications for divorce to one for license to be married....."
|
| Such a list might be a useful addition to the Kosciusko site.
|
| Have just visited the Marshall Co. IN site which now has a list of
divorces applied for. I was surprised to find two divorces for members of
the Adams family I follow.
|
| Also might note that some people I've tracked filed for divorce in
another county than where they lived. (And remarried in a third county)
