kay for what its worth I have James Woodden marrying Catherine Swerer who
died Sept 29th 1852 of typhoid fever. Catherine that is. then in Dec 11th
1852 he married Catherine Linn, One of their children was Phoebe Ann, born
Mar 9th 1838 married Amos Rockhill on Oct 2nd 1853 and died Mar 9th 1932.
They were parents of 6 children that I know of. If I remember correctly
Phoebe was supposed to be the 2nd white child born in Kos Co. and lived to
be 94.I have her obit. James & Catherine also had another daughter Agnes
Elizabeth b. Mar 19th 1833 married Jeremiah Teagarden in 1853 and died Apr
3rd 1903 This was kind of interesting I have an article taken from the
Warsaw newspaper dated 1887. It reads as follows:
William Anderson, father of our neighbor John Anderson settled on the bank
of Yellow Creek lake. He was out hunting with an Indian when his gun lock
caught in a grapevine and was accidently discharged, killing the Indian. The
tribe he belonged to was very mad and vowed revenge ; but the Indian lived
long enough to tell them that it was an accident; yet the settlers had to
call the Indians together and hold a council with them when they were finaly
pacified. James Wooden, father of Mrs Teegarden and Mrs Rockhill, was a man
of large stature and very stout and had a great influence with the Indians.
Wesley Carpenter taught school in a log school house on the hill, near the
road just the right of the bridge that crosses the race? on Wm Jackson's
farm. The Indian children went to school to him and he chastised one of the
boys with a switch. THis made his father very angry saying that he thought
that was no way to punish a boy and he complained to Wooden. He said that he
would not have cared if they had stuck his head under water, but to whip
with a stick was lowering the dignity of the son of a warrior. Wooden
quieted him telling him that his boy did not get any more than he needed.
THis article is kind of neat I think. The only reason I clipped it out was
because the Rockhill are in my line. Beth
