Site of the Month -- Aug 2000
I don't know about yall but this sure seemed like a short month (GRIN).
Anyway as I was out and about on the web this month I discovered a handful of
sites that epitomized the best in online genealogy. This months selection
process was without a doubt the toughest call we have had to make since
starting this monthly award. I wish I could give the award to all five of
the finalists but that aint how it works. (Have I stalled making this
decision long enough?) OK, Here goes. The Site of the Month for Aug 2000 is
the Kosciusko County, Indiana Home Page. Now lets do the Question Thang.
1) What type of site is it? Its a USGenWeb County Page.
2) Is the Page Current? Yes, the page was last updated on 7 Aug 2000.
3) Does the page offer a wide selection? The Mind boggles, there are
sections on Census records, marriages, Civil War soldiers, wills, land
records, tract books, biographies, bible records, cemeteries and many other
area's that are dear to the genealogists heart.
4) Does it have an easily understood format? Without a doubt, simple and
straightforward.
5) How fast does it load? (Still hate that term) Well I wont say it loads as
fast as a redneck scrambling for the last long neck but it's close.
Considering the vast amount of information on this page it loads very quickly.
6) What Sets this Site apart? I would like to draw your attention first to
the Obit section listing over 20,000 obits from this county. Some of these
obits date back to 1885. The amount of work it would take to transcribe this
material alone is worth applauding, but to give it away FREE is truly a step
beyond. All I can do is take my hat off to the selfless researches involved
with this page.
The Second section I want to draw your attention to is the "Kosciusko County
History" section featuring Marge Priser's "Yesteryear in Print" site.
I am NO
T a native of this county, to my knowledge no ancestor of mine ever stepped
foot in this county but I found its history compelling and well worth the
reading.
7) Is the Site Pure Genealogy? Yes
As far as I can tell the only major drawback to this county site is that I
cant take credit for building it.
Overall I not only recommend you visit this site I encourage you to show it
to your County Coordinator.
Adios and Keep Smiling
