Makes me sick to think of that happening to the original records. What a
shame that the various counties couldn't have gotten them back, if nothing
else.
I can understand that it takes a lot of storage space and all but some of
that information is lost forever. I do know that if you've seen a film one
place and it's bad, sometimes you can get a copy elsewhere that is better.
The FHC's occasionally have things that are first and second filming.

As to destroying the original census records, it's my understanding that
has already happened for some years. While viewing a particular bad
reel that was impossible to read, it was blurred. I asked a librarian
about it. She said the records were microfilmed and then the original
was destroyed, there wasn't an opportunity to re-film. I cannot
remember which year it was, either 1900 or 1910, I think.
