I personally want to keep the government out of this!
One set of CW records I sent for was just a few pages long. The other set
was 92 pages long. Plus it takes considerable time for them to look up the
records and copy them (and if they're on microfilm or digital storage,
someone had to take the time to do that!) $125 is a bit much, esp if there
are only a few pages.
I certainly applaud the LDS for the work they're doing to make information
available to us.

Ancestry.com free access at FHC's ending
That would certainly be nice although we know it isn't going to happen. I
believe the LDS web site (family
search.org) is trying to put as many
records on as they can and those would be free. But it would take years to
add the amount that Ancestry has had.
Apparently the National Archives had been charging about $35 for a full set
of Civil War Pension Records and are trying to raise that to something like
$125 which is ridiculous.
Some public libraries have subscribed to
Ancestry.com and as long as a
person has a valid library card/password, etc. can even get to the Ancestry
records from home. Heritage Quest is another that works the same way.

In my opinion genealogy information should be free. Our government should
provide these records for free.
