Terry,
Nice to hear from another Knox county researcher. Yes, Rebecca would be a
sibling of Humphrey, daughter of Thomas Sterman/Steerman/Starman, who died in
Knox County, Indiana Territory in 1809. He is listed in an Indiana
Territory petition as Thomas Sturman,Snr. next to Thomas Sturman, Junr. and umphrey
Sturman in 1809. As a sidenote, on at least one document, Humphrey signed
his name Steerman.
Do you know the name of the Hutson daughter? Is your ancestor a French or
connected to the Hutson family. found the estate papers on Isaac Hutson in
1814, and have their marriage in May 11, 1813 in Knox County, Indiana, so was
she born posthumously?
My ancestor was the Thomas Sturman, Junr, listed above. Also, not sure if
the woman in Humphrey's 1820 census was a wife or it could be his mother. A
fellow researcher of the French/Steerman family has that the kids mother
lived to be 93. So if that is the case she would be in the 1820 census for sure.
When thomas died in 1809 there was no mention of his wife in the probate
records, so possibly the folklore that she lived to be 93 is a myth. Chances
are she is not alive in 1809 when Thomas Steerman, Sr. died, or else she
would be mentioned.
Terry, have you ever done research on the Steerman in the Louisanna
Missouri territory?

Regarding Humphrey Sturman,
My ancestor's brother-in-law was Isaac Hutson, whose wife
and children were killed by Indians. Isaac Hutson married
Rebecca Sturman, whom I initially thought was a daughter of
Humphrey. From your info and that of other Sturman researchers,
I gather that it's more likely that Rebecca and Humphrey were
siblings. Isaac and Rebecca had one child, a daughter, before
he was killed. Rebecca went on to marry David French.
I have no certain knowledge of who Humphrey's wife was, but I notice
that others report various names for her (in
www.ancestry.com).
