I'm hoping you smart people can help me out. I know that there is a John
Buckles of Knox Co. who married Jane Simonson and is the son of Robert
Buckles. He appears on the 1850 Census living in Knox Co. at the farm of
John Skain. He is 23 (so born about 1827)and living with his wife Jane
(married in 1846) & reports he was born in Indiana.
He very closely matches my John Buckles (see info below).: Any thoughts on
how we determine whether Indiana John Buckles and Wisconsin John Buckles are
the same?
b. Feb. 1828 in Indiana (1900 census)
moved to Vernon Co., Wisconsin in 1852 (obit) & bought land (land records)
married Nancy Jane Devorse (of Sullivan County, Ind.) in 1860 in Vernon Co.
(marriage certificate)
had several children: Alexander, John, Frank, Lavina & Mary
d. 12 April 1912 (death certificate)
A few inconsistencies from Wisconsin John Buckles:
His father's name:
On his marriage certificate he writes that his father's name is William. On
his death certificate, the informant says his father's name is Jackson. The
mother's name is not filled in on either document.
His homeland:
On the 1900 census he reports his parents were both born in Germany. Buckles
is an English name. Family folklore goes both ways. Some of the old timers
think we are English, others say German.
Please help with this puzzle! I suppose the more information I find about
John Buckles & Jane Simonson of Indiana the better I will be able to
determine if they are the same. I'm presently looking into a possible death
certificate for a Jane Buckles in Vernon Co. for sometime between 1852 &
1860. Knowledge of any children would help as well.
Thanks in advance,
Julie Buckles
