Hi Folks,
The following was discussed at the meeting of the NTGS last Monday.
Lewis Library will be open most weekdays from 1PM to 4PM. It will be
staffed by volunteers, so if anyone in the Knox County area would like to
volunteer - get in touch with:
Robert Slayton
Dean of Learning Resources (aka Head Librarian)
Phone: 812.888.4166
Email: bslayton(a)indian.vinu.edu
The Northwest Territory Genealogical Society (NTGS) will continue to meet at
Lewis on the third Monday of the month at 7:30PM. VU will continue to
provide printing and bulk mail services to the Society through the end of
this year. Donna Beeson will continue to edit the "Trail Tracer" and her
Email address at VU will remain active. Donna has stated that she will
continue to answer the "easy" genealogical questions that come in to her.
Only the Knox County Death Records on Microfilm have been moved from Lewis
to the Knox County Public Library's Historical Collection. No determination
to move any other records has been made at this time. The Brockman Building
probably will not be ready until 2002! I for one am lobbying with the KCPL
staff to move all microfilms and microfische (church records, etc except
census records) from Lewis to the KCPL.
CEMETARIES in KNOX COUNTY
Recently we have become quite concerned with the state of cemetaries in Knox
County. Many persons in the NTGS are meeting at the Knox County Public
Library - Historical Collections (in the basement) at 1:30 PM this Friday
(23 March) to determine a cemetary to restore and study. We plan on finding
one in need of restoration (clearing of brush, etc) and then recording the
inscriptions on the headstones. This effort is meant to be the beginning of
an effort to update the cemetary work done in the 1930s and 1970s. Through
the efforts of several persons it has come to light that many cemetaries
have had not been recorded; and that some of those that have reportedly been
read were quite incomplete. Anyone with an interest in helping with this
new project is welcome to come to our meeting this Friday afternoon - or
contact me via Email.
