I am researching two lines from Knox County. The first is the family of Zachariah Benton
and wife, Mary. They appear in the 1880 census in Harrison township with children Isaac,
Martha E. and Samuel F. The place of birth for all family members, mothers and fathers
are all shown to be North Carolina. However, I think that may be in error, as Samuel
later consistently gave his p.o.b. as Virginia.
The second family is the Scarbrough/Scarborough/Scarbraugh family. They are shown in the
1880 census, also in Harrison township, surname spelled Scarbraugh. Head of household is
Nancy, a widow. Living with her are her son, Moses, and daughters Sarah, Mary C. and
Louisa. Moses' young wife, Lydia B., is also in the household. Again, all places of
birth are listed the same, but in this case it's Indiana.
The Indiana resources I have access to are very limited, to say the least. Does anyone
have access to the 1870 census of Knox County? I'd be interested in info on the
readings on these families, and to have the name of Nancy's husband. I am also
looking for a marriage record for Samuel Foster Benton and Sarah Scarbrough between 1880
and 1882.
My husband is descended from Samuel & Sarah Scarbrough Benton.
Thank you!
