I am looking for information on Charles Chambers born in Knox County
sometime between 1831 and 1836 (census and Civil War papers differ). I
would like to know who his parents and siblings were. He married
Margaret Keith, daughter of John Keith and Delilah Ruby of Subdivision
61, 28 Jan 1857. They had a daughter in Dec 1857 named Althea and/or
Margaret Chambers. I can’t find them in 1860 census. Charles then
joined the Union Army.
He was in the Grand Army of the Republic during the Civil War. He
entered the 51st Regime of the Indiana Infantry on 22 Oct. 1861 as a
private for 3 years. He was captured at the battle of Lookout Mountain
in Tennessee. He was held in Libby Prison until the war was over. He
was discharged 17 Dec 1864 at Nashville, Tennessee. His discharge
papers indicate he was age 28.
After he returned home, he and Margaret had a son, Edward Everett
Chamber
(my great-grandfather) on 22 Dec 1867. They were living in
Freelandville,
Widner, Knox, Indiana in the 1870 Census. On 5 Feb 1871, Margaret
applied for
Widow’s pension. Charles had been killed by a heart attach when he was
struck by lighting. I can’t find Margaret or the children until the 1900
Census. Margaret is living with her daughter Althea and both are widows.
Edward has married Mary C. Armstrong in 1889 and had 5 daughters and 2
sons.
