Hello,
I was at Bicknell last week and was informed by the librarian in Bicknell that the Lewis library was going to be open 1p to 4p Monday thru Friday. This information was also published in The Independent, the Bicknell Newspaper. I understand that Donna Beeson was retired with 29 years of service due to financial cutbacks of Vincennes University. The genealogy portion of the Lewis Library is to be moved into a nearby building that was Brubaker Funeral Home. Eventually, I was told, plans are to relocate court records and other information located around the city to this one location.
Brian Spangler, is another name that could perhaps give more information about the Lewis Library.
I have not spoke directly with anyone in Vincennes.......just word of mouth!
My Great Grandmother, Rosa EDWARDS, was born in Knox Co. on 6 Oct 1873. Can
someone confirm this or tell me where to look for the record?
She and my Great Grandfather, Edward KELLEY, were married in Oct. of 1890. I
am not sure of where. Their first child is said to have been born in MO. I
would like to check that out also.
Suggestions?
Thanks in advance,
Pat (Patricia) in WA State
The library is indeed to be open from 1-4pm on Monday-Friday and is supposed
to be staffed by volunteers! Donna Beeson has taken retirement - BUT - the
library will act as the center for the meetings of the Northwest Territory
Genealogical Society for the near future.
When the new Brockmann extension to the Knox County Public Library is
finished (sometime in 2002?) all genealogical materials will be transfered
to that facility and meetings of the NTGS will probably be there also. The
death records on microfilm have been moved to the KCPL now. Other records
may be moved in the near future. Those that the KCPL has room for - the
Probates and original marriage records for Knox county that are in Lewis
will probably remain there until Brockman is ready.
Donna Beeson will continue to edit the NTGS newsletter - TRAIL TRACER - and
VU has agreed to print it for us, but VU's financial difficulties will
probably end that for the NTGS soon. Donna Beeson's Email address at VU
will remain active.
Lynn David Recker
VP, NTGS

For those who haven't heard, the Lewis Historical Library in Vincennes is undergoing some major hour changes.
They are, supposedly, going to be open only 1:00 - 4:00, Monday thru Friday. There are doubts that this will even happen, it may not be open that much.
Hello List,
I am seeking the parents and siblings of GEORGE W. BURNETT,
born in Indiana, November 15, 1862.
I have no idea the county. That was all I could find on census, death
certificate, etc.
On a tape, made when she was very old, his wife Mary, related this story told
to her by GEORGE.
George's mother was killed in an accident or died suddenly, when he was an
infant.
There were other children, don't know ages or how many. George was adopted by
Shoemaker/Shumaker?Shoebaker???
He lived with them until the courthouse burned. It destroyed the adoption
records. I don't know his age at the time this occurred. He was in Sumner
County, Kansas on April 14, 1900. On that day he married Mary M. Bell.
George said he couldn't have left if the records were still available for his
adoption. Reason unknown. When he left Indiana, he took back his birth name
BURNETT, and continued to use it until his death.
This is a brick wall. I would really appreciate any help or advise you could
provide.
If you have any information, you may Email me at JANETSQUAW(a)aol.com
Thank you in advance for your help.
Respectfully yours,
Jan
