I suspect that the spelling was rather fluid between "Grinstead" and
"Grimstead"; much as my Rogers line was "Rogers" or
"Rodgers" in any given year. I notice that many in the Grinstead family will
post as "Grinstead/Grimstead" in GenForum. I have pasted info on the Grinstead
line below found at
http://genforum.genealogy.com/grinstead/messages/77.html . Does
the William you are speaking of look like he is in this line?

Tom: Here is my Grinstead file.
Descendants of William Grinstead
Generation No. 1
1. WILLIAM1 GRINSTEAD was born 1634 in East Grinstead England, and died 1661. He married
(1) ELIZABETH KAY July 21, 1656 in Northumberland County, VA, daughter of THOMAS KEYS and
BESS (UNKNOWN). He married (2) ELIZABETH KAY July 21, 1656, daughter of THOMAS KAY and
MARTHA.
Notes for WILLIAM GRINSTEAD:
William came to Northumberland County VA in 1650. Colonel Mottrum gave 50 acres of VA land
to pay for the passage of each servent. At this time, William and 25 men came from
England. They were to work as indentured servents for five or six years. When William met
Elizabeth Key (Kaye) he was not permitted to marry until he served the full time with his
benefactor. In 1653, Elizabeth, sued the estate of Col. Motram and with the help of her
lawyer, William, she won (See notes on Elizabeth Key).
Notes for ELIZABETH KAY:
Elizabeth Key (Kay), a mulatto servent, sued the estate of Colonel John Motram for her
freedom. William Grinstead, a 20 year old Englishman was her lawyer and the two of them
fell in love. She became the mother of his two infant sons and William married her in
1659. A relative in 1656 bequeathed the boys, William and John some 500 acres of land and
provisions for an education, enough to insure them solid footing. Of John's children
six are readily identifiable from documents extant and of William's nine. From the
children of John and Elizabeth are descended practically anyone who can trace their
Greensteed, Grinsted and Grinstead ancestry back to the middle of last century in the
country. Elizabeth's father, Thomas Kay, a former member of the House of Burgess
wished to ensure his daughter's protection so at the time of his death he bound her
over to Humphrey Higginson for nine years as a legal means of doing so (Higginson was her
godfather and had, according to records "Prom!
ised to use her as well as if she were his own child". (Frontline Article and
Research)
In 1655 Jesse Kaye (Key) the half brother of Elizabeth is given a court order to
acknowledge Elizabeth as his sister (this occurred at Colonel Mottrom's home).
(Information given to me by Melicent Remy).

Notes for JOHN GRINSTEAD I:
In 1748, John inherited land in Northumberland County and purchased new acreage in Henrico
County near Richmond where he lived until he died in 1791. Some list as many as telve
children, but since Charles and Daniel were not mentioned in John's will, we assume
they died in their early years. Moved to Jennings County IN abt 1823,

in Henrico County VA near Richmond where he lived until his death in 1791. Some list as
many as twelve children, buty since Charles and Daniel were not mentioned in John's

Grinstead's brother, William II. Some researchers list as many as twelve children.

I have a question on this group-there is a will of a William
Grimstead, but
I have seen the name Grinstead in other County records, I have checked this a
number of times and it looks like Grimstead. Can anyone tell me if there are
both Grimsteads and Grinsteads in Jennings County or if this is one family?
Should this be the will of William Grinstead?
