Lilian was my dear friend. The dedication she had to church, family and work
was a inspiration to many. Although she had no biological children, she had
many children: her three nieces, their children and numerous other extended
family members.
Lilian was a familiar face in Jennings County as she covered meetings for
the newspaper with her ever present camera. Thursdays were spent at the
courthouse gathering news for "Covering the Courthouse," a feature of the
"North Vernon Sun" that was greatly anticipated each week by those of us
anxious to know the latest divorce filings (or in some cases, who had
reconciled and dismissed a divorce petition,) marriage license applications,
small claims filed, suits or foreclosures filed and who had violated their
probation and was now going to jail. And, of course, we all looked forward
to "100 Years Ago" each week. Lilian had worked at the newspaper for over 52
years, and was at work the day she went to the hospital almost two weeks
ago.
During the years I worked at the funeral home, we were back and forth on the
phone and email several times a week making sure obituary information was
correct. I can remember times when those making funeral arrangements would
not know something about their family member and I would call Lilian to get
an answer. Or, she would call me after an obituary was sent and say, for
example, "That's not right, she went to ABC School, not XYZ School."
Lilian's obituary will appear sometime today on the newspaper website:
www.plaindealer-sun.com. Please read it to learn more about her full life.
