Hopewell: Charles Miles, formerly of this place, died last Sunday morning at his
sister's, Mrs. Lena Clarkson, of Butlerville after a lingering illness of
consumption.
Can anyone add anything to this family?

I took a look for your James Miles. I only found what must be James Jr.
He was born 12 Apr 1843 and died 11 Sep 1893. He was in Co K 148 Ind Inf
in the Civil War. He was married to Martha 23 Sep 1849- 12 Nov 1897. I
found a tiny blurb in the newspaper when he died.
From the Banner Plain Dealer, September 13, 1893
James Miles, who has been so seriously sick for several months, died yesterday morning.
His burial occurs at Brush Creek today. He was a worthy soldier and for many years has
been an honest worker at mending shoes. In health, he was thought to be the happiest man
in the community.

Donna,
There is a George T. Miles listed on the Brush Creek Cemetery records as
1882 - 1891. This is an old reading done about 35 years ago, and it has many errors.
The 1880 census of Jennings County shows a George L. Miles, age 4, son of Thomas R. and
Sarah Miles. George L. would have been 14 in 1890, and probably would not have been called
"Little Georgie." Also, this Miles family lived in Center Township, and
Butlerville is in Campbell Township.

The 1880 census for James and Martha Miles shows:
Miles, James 37 Farmer Ind Ky NC
Martha 30 Keeps house Ind Ind Ind
James 10 at home Ind Ind Ind
Lena 6 at home Ind Ind Ind
Anna 4 at home Ind Ind Ind
Charles 6/12 at home Ind Ind Ind
Lena was my grandmother and was married to Thomas Osborn Clarkson.
James D. Miles died 11 September 1893. When Martha applied for a pension,
she had three children under the age of sixteen. Their names and dates of
birth are:
Charles L. Miles 22 Dec 1879
Carl T. Miles 14 Apr 1885
Emisley E. Miles 06 Aug 1888
I looked at the Board of Health office for a death record of "Little
Georgie," but could not find anything. Maybe he was a son of James and
Martha born after Emisley. If I have a chance before winter, I'll go to
Brush Creek Cemetery and see if he is buried beside James and Martha.
Donna,
About thirty seconds after sending the previous message, I remembered
something!
My brother, Tom Taylor, spent a long time tracking down the Miles Family
Bible, and was finally able to get a copy of hand written notes taken from
that Bible.
James Duval Miles Jr. and Martha Washington Clarkson's children are given
as:
James Washington Miles b. 23 Jan 1869
Lena Washington Miles b. 23 Aug 1874
Nancy Belle Miles b. 22 Sept 1877
Charles Lawson Miles b. 22 Dec 1879
Carl Thomas Miles b. 14 Apr 1885
George Thomas Miles b. 2 July 1882 d. 1891 age 9 years
Emisley Enoch Miles b. 6 Aug 1888
So - "Little Georgie" was the son of James and Martha and a brother to my
grandmother, Lena Miles Clarkson. According to the death records at the
health department, there was also a premature infant son who died 6 Sept
1887 at the age of one day. No first name was given for the infant.
Other information taken from the family Bible shows:
James Duval Miles b. 8 May 1805, d. 28 Nov 1876
Tamar Pool Miles b. 8 July 1810 d. 1 Oct 1880
married 1 Nov 1832
Rueben Miles b. July 1765 d. 20 Sep 1845
Elizabeth Miles b. 1767 d. 12 Aug 1860
I had forgotten about having this! The past 3 -4 years have been, and
continue to be, very busy for me. I haven't spent much time on genealogy
except for doing the newsletter for the Vawter Family Association.

Donna,
Frank Oswald Willey married Nancy Belle Miles in 1895. At this time, I don't
know where. Nancy Belle Miles was the daughter of James Duval Miles Jr. and
Martha Washington Clarkson Miles and the sister of my grandmother, Lena
Washington Miles Clarkson. Charles Miles was their brother.
I hope to get back to some serious researching soon. I think I shared with
you at one time that I was very busy helping my dad remain "independent" in
his apartment. He passed away at the end of November - still living "on his
own." at the age of 94. Since then I've been dealing with sorting his things
and settling the estate. That is all about to be finished.

IN today's 100 years column there was in Ezra
Ezra: Sylvia West has been working at Milhouse's. Clarence
Roberts visited
his brother, Jessie Roberts, Sunday. Several of our boys were pretty much
frightened when one of the men connected with the telephone business called
them out of the school house and gave them a talking to about throwing at
and injuring the telephone wires. Ezra Stanley called on Jessie Robert
Sunday afternoon. Etta Neely was the guest of D.F. Frankin Wednesday. Mrs.
M.F. Milhous called on Mrs. Lucy Shuck Thursday afternoon. Frank Willey
spent Saturday night with his brother-in-law, Charlie Miles, who is very
sick
Can someone tell me who Charlie Miles's parents were and the
sister that
married Frank Willey???

Donna,
Apparently in the early 1890s Jesse Clarkson married Elizabeth Leahigh in Jennings Co,
Indiana
I have been trying to connect her to other Leahighs in the area genealogy. Do you happen
to know her parents names?
