Dear Bonnie,
Here is some information I have found about "a" Frederick A. Curtis. I hope
this helps. I think he went to Ohio.
Sincererly,
Jonathan Loppnow

----
Frederick A. Curtis is found in the 1820 census for Jennings County IN
3 sons age 0-10
3 sons 10-16
1 male 45 and over
1 daughter 0-10
1 female 26-45
Then in 1850 there is a Frederick A. Curtis
Butler County, Oxford Twp, Ohio stamped page 426
Frederick A. Curtis 80 (born ca 1770 Born Ireland or Indiana (Hard to
read)
Jane F. 33 (relationships are not listed in 1850 census) born IN? (born
IN or IA hard to read)
Charlotte A. Swift 12 (born IN?)
David Tuttle Curtis 7/12 (born IN?)
Familysearch.org shows a Frederick A. Curtis marrying a Jane Francis, ca
1849 in Oxford, Butler County, OH.
The question is, are these 2 Frederick A. Curtis' the same?
Circumstancial Evidence:
The Frederick A. Curtis we find in Ohio had a son named Horatio Nelson
Curtis, born 1802 in New York. There is a web site about him at:
http://www.geocities.com/mayes_deb/curtis/curtis2.htm
The Horatio Nelson Curtis mentioned married an Elizabeth "Betsy" Hughes on
Oct 22. 1823 according to this website, in INDIANA. I did a search on the
Indiana State Library listing of marriage records in Indiana at
http://199.8.200.90:591/h-i-j-k.html
by "hughes" for Jennings County, IN and found:
HUGHES, BETSEY marrying a CURTICE(sic), HORATIO N. Jennings 1-22-1823.
Though the month doesn't jibe or surname spelling this is obviously the same
marriage.
Sooo, this places at least Horatio and presumably his father Frederick A.
Curtis in Indiana. It would seem quite a coincidence but not impossible
that that the Frederick A. Curtis of Jennings County Indiana in 1820 is not
the same Frederick A. Curtis of Butler County, Ohio.
Elizabeth Hughes was the daughter of a Samuel Hughes. There was a Sam
Hughes living near Frederick A. Curtis in Jennings County, though of course
no guarantee that's the same man. (Horatio Nelson Curtis married second a
Susannah WOODCOX. He died ca 1871 in Antwerp OH buried Old Maumee
Cemetery )
Agewise it would work too as the Ohio Frederick is 80 in 1850 and the
Indiana Frederick was in the "45 and over" category.
Here is the article from the web site:
http://www.geocities.com/mayes_deb/curtis/curtis2.htm
Horatio N. Curtis and Susannah Woodcox
My 4th great grandfather was General Horatio N. Curtis, the first white
settler of Paulding County, Ohio, on the northwest side of the state.
Born 11 December 1802 in New York, the son of Frederick Curtis, Horatio (who
actually went by "Nelson") was a descendant of the Curtis family from
Connecticut. Originally a fur trader, he moved first to Williams County,
Ohio.
He made his second visit to Paulding County, Ohio, on 10 March 1823, where
he later settled. He built a trading post in Cranesville in 1825, also
establishing a post office in his trading post which functioned from
1825-1840. He served also as surveyor and was the recipient of various land
grants over a large span of time. He was the first Paulding County recorder
(county clerk).
As one of the first justices of Crane Township, he performed the first
marriage in Carryall Township, Paulding County, Ohio, in 1830, between
Phillip Murphy and Nancy Runyon.
Horatio is listed on Schedule B of the government treaty with the Chippewa,
Ottawa, and Potawatamie Indians, dated 27 September 1833.
Horatio appears on the 1860 census for Paulding County.
Horatio N. Curtis married first, Elizabeth "Betsy" Hughes, who was born 11
June 1808, on 22 October 1823 in Jennings County, Indiana. Betsy was the
daughter of Samuel Hughes and Elizabeth "Betsy" Whedon. Horatio and Betsy
were the parents of at least two children:
George W., died Monticello, Jones County, Iowa; married Catharine Clemmer
Eliza Jane, born 16 September 1832, died 29 July 1873; married Jacob Saylor
1 January 1852
On 16 May 1833, Horatio married his second wife, Susannah Woodcox, in
Williams County, Ohio. Susannah was born 1812 in Ohio. The date of her
death and her parentage are not currently known.
They were the parents of at least three children:
Frederick Augustus, born 1834; married Frances Elizabeth Vories 27 October
1853
Horatio N., born 1840
Francis M., born 1841; married (1) Ziltha C. Durphy 29 June 1862, (2) Mary
C. Erter 10 September 1863, (3) Sarah A. Smith 14 October 1866
It has sometimes been written that yet another wife was Maria Neafus, by
whom Horatio had a daughter:
Sarah Elizabeth, born 14 February 1836 Rochester County, New York, died 12
June 1860 Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan; married Carlo Grandison Curtiss
25 September 1855 in Rochester County, New York.
