I have finished transcribing the first two books and decided to send them
to the list in their entirety. They are not big files in .txt format, so I
hope that is permissible. I copied the abstracts as Mr. Holmes wrote them
without reference to the original files, although I have many of them on a
CD in .tif format also. I hope these files will be helpful to many
Jennings County researchers.

The bond for James STOTT as County Clerk was secured by James, Zenas
KIMBERLY, James Webb, Joseph NEWTON and Isaiah BLANKENSHIP. The first four
signed their names and Isaiah made his mark. April 6, 1818.
Page 4: William PRATHER appeared at the place of holding court in Vernon,
but as no other judge appeared no session was held, and the court
adjourned. July 13, 1818.
Page 5: Elrie WELLS was app. administrator Nov. 1818 of the estate of
William WELLS deceased who died June 181, 1818, with William McCLAY and
Chancy BUTLER as his securities. An inventory of William's personal
property was filed in court.
Page 6: Jonathan BARRETT produced his commission from the Governor of
Indiana June 1819 as an Associate Judge of the Jennings Co. Court.
Page 7: John VAWTER was appointed Mar. 23, 1819 adm. of the estate of
Samuel S. ROBY deceased. An inventory of his personal property was filed in
court and as it was insufficient to pay the debts of the estate the adm.
petitioned the court to sell Samuel's real estate, which was lot number
four in the town of Vernon.
Edward CORN as administrator of the estate of Phoebe CORN deceased, filed
an inventory in court of her personal property which had been appraised by
Jos. BIGGS and John BONER under the hand and seal of A. VAWTER, Esq. The
expense of maintaining of $110. for five years and six months, she being
old and infirm, was listed as an expense by the adm. Final settlement made
of her estate June 1819.
Page 9: John LAMPSON produced in court his power of attorney granted by
Thomas ROBY as adm. of the estate of Samuel ROBY dec. Thomas had been app.
adm. by the court of Cumberland Co., Mass. John VAWTER turned over to
Thomas all of the papers concerning the estate of Samuel in Jennings Co.

Page 11: Elrie the widow of William WELLS dec. was issued a citation by the
court to produce a satisfactory list of William's estate. Apr. 4, 1820.
Zenas KIMBERLY who was app. administrator Oct. 22, 1818 of the estate of
Levi REED deceased filed an inventory of Levi's personal property in court
which was mostly clothing and household items but included two bunches of
shingles, a stock of plank, a field of corn and some potatoes. Apr. 4, 1820.

MILLER his executors. The will was witnessed by Thomas GRAHAM, Sr. and
Chapman DENSLOW. Jane and James were confirmed as executors with Thomas
GRAHAM, Sr., and James HOBBS as their securities. July 15, 1822.

Gilbert SUTFIN deceased with Achilles VAWTER and John RUSSELL as his
securities. Richard STOTT, James HOBBS and Joseph BIGGS appraised the

Page 24: The will of Peleg BAKER deceased was here entered. It was dated
June 25, 1822 and recorded Sept. 19, 1822. He mentioned his sons Joel,
John, David and Jonathan, his daughters Anna BURTON, Patsy POTTS, Susannah
DAVIS, Betsey BAKER, Nancy BAKER and Mariah BAKER. Also sons William and
Stephen and daughter Sally SPEARS. He appointed Bazel MEEK and Joseph MEEK
as his executors. Will was witnessed by Ezra F. PABODY, Patrick HUDSON,
Danl. MEREDITH and Namsah SULLIVAN.
Page 26: Mary ROGERS the widow was app. administratrix of the estate of
John ROGERS dec. with Ebenezer BRANDON and James BUCKLEY as her securities.
Mary filed in court an inventory of John's personal property appraised by
Chapman DENSLOW and John HOPKINS. The personal property was the usual
household and farm items and included one lot of books, a yoke of steers,
shoemaker's tools and a box of gunsmith's tools. Oct. 21, 1822.
Page 28: Eliza SHIELDS and William J. SHIELDS were app. administrators Aug.
22, 1822 of the estate of William SHIELDS deceased with Samuel SHIELDS and
James ELLIOTT as their securities. The personal property was appraised by
Ransom PERRY, John WINCHELL and Joseph ENGLISH and was the usual farm and
household items plus a set of blacksmith's tools, 1 set of stone tools, one
millstone, some woodworking tools and a one horse mill and shay. The adms.
were ordered to rent the farm on which William died. October 1822.
Page 38: Polly BLANKENSHIP and John VAWTER were app. adms. Aug. 19, 1822 of
the estate of Isaiah BLANKENSHIP deceased with Alexander CHAMBERS and ...
CHAMBERS as their securities. An inventory of the personal property was
filed in court which was the usual household goods and items found on a
farm. Real estate of one hundred sixty acres on which the widow lived was
also listed. A sum was received by the estate from Willoughby CONNER which
may have been a payment on the 160 acres.
Page 43: John BONER adm. filed an inventory of the personal property of
Gilbert SUTFIN deceased which was mostly household goods, a writing desk
and several items of men's clothing. The adm. listed the expense of going
to Kentucky for the estate, of buying four gallons of whiskey (possibly
used at sale of personal property) and the expense of boarding and nursing
the widow seven weeks when she was ill. Oct. 1822.
page 49: Bazel MEEK and Joseph MEEK executors filed an inventory of the
personal property of Peleg BAKER deceased which was the usual household and
farm items and include a pack saddle, some woodworking tools, a nursery of
apple trees and several promissory notes and accounts due the deceased.
Maurice BAKER and Samuel MEEK were appraisers of the personal property.

Page 58: Alexander CHAMBERS Jr. was app. adm. Sept. 15, 1820 of the estate
of Joel EARWOOD, dec., with John CHAMBERS as his security. John LATIMORE
and Allen HILL were appraisers of the personal property which was household
and farm items and two promissory notes. Oct. 1822.
Page 60: The will of James SHEPHERD dec was filed in court. It was dated
Sept. 6, 1822 and no recording date was listed. He mentioned his wife
Polly, daughters Rachel CLEM, Nancy CLEM, Patsey DENSLOW, sons William and
Joshua, daughter Betsey SHEPHERD, sons Amos and James and "the child my
wife is now pregnant with". Also his daughters Frances, Hetty, Annis,
Melitta and Demily SHEPHERD. He appointed his wife and son William his
executors. The will was witnessed by Evan THOMAS and Thomas GRAHAM, Sr.
Nov. 14, 1822.

Nathan MEEK, Jr., dec. Thomas RICHEY and John KELLUM appraised the personal
property which was the usual household and farm items and included some
deerskins. Feb. 17, 1823.
Page 69: Mary ROGERS admx. of the estate of John ROGERS deceased filed a
report on the sale of his personal property. Cash from Virginia was listed
as an asset of the estate. Feb. 17, 1823.
Page 73: William J. SHIELDS was app. the guardian of Sarah Ann and Jesse
SHIELDS and John and Ezekiel LOGAN or it may have meant Sarah Ann, Jesse
and John SHIELDS and Ezekiel LOGAN. Feb. 25, 1825.
Sally MEEK the widow of Nathan MEEK dec. petitioned the court to set off
her dower in Nathan's estate. Ebenezer BRANDON, John KELLAM and James EARL
were appointed to do this. William MEEK adm. of Nathan's estate now
petitioned the court to sell all the real estate to pay the debts of this
estate. Apr. 13, 1823.
Page 76: Polly SHEPHERD and William SHEPHERD filed in court an inventory of
the personal property of James SHEPHERD deceased which included a set of
cooper's tools and the usual items found on a farm and its household. May
19, 1823.
Page 79: Charles PLYMATE a minor over 14 petitioned the court to appoint
Moses BROWN his guardian. May 19, 1823.
The court upon mature consideration rescinded and set aside all proceedings
it had on Apr. 13, 1823 concerning the estate of Nathan MEEK dec. May 19,
1823.
Page 80: Ebenezer BRANDON one of the securities of Mary ROGERS admx. of the
estate of John ROGERS dec. stated that Mary had intermarried with John REED
and the court ordered John to file a bond with additional security. May 19,
1823.
For the purpose of dividing the real estate of William SHIELDS dec. among
his heirs, Adam KELLAR was appointed the guardian of Sarah, Jesse, John and
Ezekiel L. SHIELDS. May 19, 1823.
Page 81: Monday, Sept. 1823 William PRATHER appeared before the court and
as no sheriff or no other judge appeared, Thomas ARMSTRONG was called upon
to perform the duties of the sheriff and the court adjourned until Thursday.
The will of Ann BUCKLES dec. was here entered. It was dated May 1, 1823 and
recorded Sept. 17, 1823. She mentioned David OSBORN, Jr., who was to get a
legacy left her by her father, William OSBORN's will. Her eldest daughter,
Mary REED and Mary's eldest daughter Ann ROGERS; George W. BUCKLES "at his
father's death"; "my three daughters" and "my daughter-in-law,
Elizabeth
BUCKLES". She appointed Peter WYKOFF her son-in-law, her executor. The will
was witnessed by Ebenezer BRANDON and John HOPKINS. Sept. 17, 1823.
Page 83: Naomi EASTMAN was app. admx. of the estate of Nathaniel EASTMAN
deceased with Horace N. FRENCH and Zane NEWTON as her securities. William
CLARK and Zephaniah FRENCH appraised the personal property which were many
small notes due the deceased and a small amount of household goods and farm
items. Sept. 17, 1823.
Page 85: On the motion of Elizabeth SHIELDS, Lewis L. STOTT was appointed
the guardian of Sarah Ann, Jesse, John and Ezekiel SHIELDS, minor heirs of
William SHIELDS deceased. Elizabeth was allowed a sum for keeping the
children from Aug. 6, 1822 to date Sept. 20, 1823.
Page 89: The court ordered the letters granted William MEEK as
administrator of the estate of Nathan MEEK dec. to be revoked. Sept. 20, 1823.
Page 90: Willoughby CONNER and James HELTON filed an inventory in court of
the personal property of Margaret BLAGDON deceased, which was household
goods and included "a Yankey Clock". The adm. listed a sum due for nursing
and boarding her in time of sickness Sept. 1823. No name was mentioned in
this entry but it appeared to be Margaret's estate, according to Maurice
Holmes (author of this book).
Page 94: William MEEK adm. of the estate of Nathan MEEK, dec., filed in
court an additional inventory of personal property of Nathan's which was
several promissory notes. He also listed the expense of gathering cooper's
ware and getting home one keg of vinegar and carrying home one rifle and an
axe from Columbus. Sept. 1823.
Page 98: William C. BRAMWELL was appointed to administrate the residue of
the estate of Nathan MEEK, dec. in place of William MEEK whose letters had
been revoked for want of sufficient security. William BRAMWELL did not file
a bond and David MEEK was app. administrator of this estate with Samuel
MEEK and Richard MEEK as his securities. December 1823.
Page 99: The will of James FOWLER deceased was here entered. It was dated
Oct. 16, 1823 and no recording date was listed. He mentioned his wife Jane,
his son Joshua, money due him from Alexander COLLINS and "all my children".
The will was witnessed by Thomas HIL, Jr., Allen HILL and Nathaniel ROBERTSON.

1826, as executors of the will of Benjamin B. HEWES dec. and they filed in
court an inventory of his personal property and real estate which included
several medical books, one tomahawk, a medicine chest and drawers, various
medicines and pieces of a doctor's equipment, household goods, a horse and
saddle, lots and a dwelling house in the town of Paris, land in Hanover,
Jefferson Co., and a book of accounts showing outstanding debts due
Benjamin. Samuel S. GRAHAM and James S. SMYTH appraised this property.
