The following probate records were found in "Court Records, Jennings
County, Indiana, 1818-1850" by Maurice Holmes, Published by Ft. Wayne,
Ind.: Allen County Public Library, 1986
I have copied these abstracts as Mr. Holmes wrote them without reference to
the original files.

Chapman DENSLOW produced a commission from the Governor of Indiana as judge
of the court.
Page 2: E. F. PABODY and Thomas HILL, Jr., adms. of the estate of Samuel
ADAMS dec. filed in court an inventory and appraisement of the personal
property of Samuel which included a rifle, shot pouch and horn, one patent
clock, two stands of bees, some household goods and farm implements and six
promissory notes. Nathan ROBERTSON and Samuel A. KEITH appraised the
personal property. Mary ADAMS was listed as the widow. James BUCKLES and D.
B. PENDLETON bound themselves with the widow for the balance of the estate.

Page 3: Richard STOTT was discharged as the guardian of Robert KENYON a
minor it having been proved that Robert was not a legal heir of William
KENYON dec. Sept. 8, 1829.
Page 3: The will of William HOOD deceased was here entered. It was dated
Jan. 10, 1826 and recorded Sept. 7, 1829. He mentioned his wife, Kitty, and
sons Jesse and Hannibal who were to get the same as his oldest children to
wit; Ephraim and Rachel. His youngest daus. were listed as Elenor and Eliza
Ann. He appointed his wife his executrix. The will was witnessed by James
STOTT and Alanson ANDREWS. The court app. Kitty admx. with the will annexed
and at her request Richard STOTT was appointed in her stead. Richard
declared to the court in Nov. 1829 that this estate was insolvent.
Page 4 & 5: Bazel MEEK adm. of the estate of Joshua MEEK dec. petitioned
the court to sell Joshua's real estate as the personal property was
insufficient to pay the debts of the estate. The sale was to be advertised
in the Indiana Republican at Madison, Ind. The real estate was sold but the
purchaser was not here named. Joshua owed for notes held by Daniel MEEK,
Henry MEEK and James DENSFORD of Kentucky. Sept. 5, '29.
Page 5: The court adopted the eagle side of a half dollar of the North
American coin as its seal.
Page 5: John CHAMBERS Jr. filed a report as executor of the will of John
CHAMBERS, Sr., dec. Sept. 5, 1829.
Page 7: David (or Daniel) R. MIDCAP was app. the guardian of Polly Ann and
James L. EARWOOD with John MIDCAP as his security. Sept. 5, 1829.
Page 6: Daniel R. MIDCAP and wife Matilda, late Matilda EARWOOD and an heir
of Joel EARWOOD, dec., and Daniel R. MIDCAP as the guardian of Polly Ann
EARWOOD vs. Alexander CHAMBERS adm. of the estate of Joel EARWOOD dec. in a
suit. The entry stated that Joel died sometime in 1819 and Alexander
CHAMBERS was appointed adm. of his estate. Alexander had not yet made
settlement of this estate and the court ordered him to do so. Jan. 1, 1830.
Page 11: Zenas KIMBERLY adm. of the estate of Levi REED deceased filed in
court an additional inventory of the personal property of this estate which
included some promissory notes due the dec. and money received from the
sale of the real estate. Mar. 1, 1830.
Page 12: Elsia WELLS (now the wife of Justus RICH) filed an additional
inventory of the personal property of the estate of William WELLS deceased
and Justus was app. adm. of this estate with proper security. Justus made
final settlement of this estate July 1830.
Page 13: Samuel D. GRAHAM was appointed the guardian of Polly McGLOUGHLIN
with Thomas GRAHAM as his security.
Page 13: James LLOYD the gdn. of John WIMPLE a lunatic petitioned the court
to sell the real estate of John on Sand Creek for his subsistance as he had
no personal property. William BROWN, Henry S. SOPER and James SHIELDS were
app. appraisers of the real estate. May 3, 1830.
Page 14: Richard STOTT was app. adm. of the estate of James STOTT deceased
with James COWELL as his surety. May 3, 1830.

Page 26: Achilles VAWTER filed a report as the guardian of the minor heirs
of John H. ROGERS Dec. Jan. 6, 1831.
Page 26: Katharine GRAY who had been appointed the guardian by the
Jefferson Co. Court of the minor heirs of Jesse GRAY dec. petitioned the
court to sell Jesse's real estate in Section 18, Township 7, Range 8.
William H. H. GRAY, an heir over 21 gave his assent to this sale. William
BROWN, William CLARK, and Amos KNAPP appraised the real estate. Jan. 6, 1831.
Page 27: The will of Darby McGANNON deceased was filed in court and proven
by the oaths of Chesly, Woodward and Joseph CARNES. Sally McGANNON and John
S. TORBETT executors named in the will were to appear in court and file
bond. Jan. 7, 1831.
Page 27: Moses THARP petitioned the court to partition the real estate of
Robert RUSSELL dec. Isaac HALL, Jr., James SMITH and William C. BRAMWELL
were appointed by the court to make this partition. Jan. 7, 1831.
Page 27: At the request of Lewis PRICE, James STOCKTON was appointed the
guardian of Lucy Jane PRICE and Ann Maria PRICE the daughters of Lewis,
with Reuben McGANNON as his security. March 10, 1831.

McGANNON deceased with John S. TORBETT and Reuben McGANNON as her sureties.

she had sold Jesse's real estate to Joseph EDMINSTER. Mar. 10, 1831.
Page 30: John GRINSTEAD was app. the guardian of Simon and Ann WIMPLE,
minor heirs of John WIMPLE, a lunatic. March 10, 1831.
Page 31: The commissioners reported to the court their partition of the
real estate of Robert RUSSELL dec. to the widow, to Moses THARP who had
purchased John RUSSELL's share, to Mary TERRELL, To Nancy STRATTON, to
Stephen RUSSELL, Betsey GILLIAM, to Andrew RUSSELL, a minor (a son of Wm.
dec. who was a son of Robt. dec.) and to Rachel AVERY. A map of the
partition was here entered. Mar. 10, 1831.
Page 36: Richard STOTT adm. of the estate of James STOTT dec. filed an
appraisement of James' real estate and the court ordered it to be sold. On
page 93 Richard reported that he had sold James' real estate which was
several town lots May 4, 1831.

heir of Charles WHITAKER dec. May 5, 1831.
Page 39: The adm. of the estate of William HOOD dec. reported that he had
sold William's real estate to Thomas STONE. May 5, 1831.
Page 41: Mary BARNUM was confirmed as executrix of the will of Barna BARNUM
dec. by the court in vacation. Sept. 8, 1831.
Page 42: John McLAUGHLIN, the father of Sally McLAUGHLIN, petitioned the
court to appoint him her guardian in place of Samuel D. GRAHAM, which the
court does. Sept. 8, 1831.
Page 45: William SANFORD filed a report as adm. of the estate of Benjamin
W. CLARK dec. In the report were sums paid Samuel ROGERS as clerk of the
sale of the personal property, Cornelius CLOVER for the coffin, Patrick
HUDSON for crying the sale and Martha BLISS and Sherman WATSON for the
children's tuition. Also John KIRKENDALL for the tavern bill, David RAYS
(Ray?) for attendance in the last sickness, Sarah Ann VARNEY for keeping
house, Ira WELLS a store account, Hiram J. BROWN and John W. KNAPP for work
done on the house, William HOLT for widow HOLT's tuition of Cynthia, the
adm. for hauling the household and kitchen furniture from Madison and the
expense of boarding John, Cynthia and Orlando and for goods purchased from
Jonathan FOSTER's grocery. Sept. 8, 1831.
Page 49: The court confirmed Annanias HUDSON as adm. of the estate of John
RANDALL deceased granted him by the court in vacation. The adm. filed an
inventory and an appraisement of the personal property which included a
sidesaddle, a pair of hand millstones, a set of blacksmith tools and the
usual household and farm items. Nov. 21, 1831.
Page 51: The adms. made final settlement of the estate of Samuel ADAMS
deceased. Oct. 15, 1831.
Page 54: Samuel GRAHAM guardian appointed by the court of Shelby Co.,
Kentucky petitioned the court to sell the one third interest each in real
estate in Jennings Co. belonging to Cynthia and Mary Jane SHELLEDAY, minor
heirs of Caleb SHELLEDAY dec. The court appointed Henry CUNARD, James S.
SMYTH and Samuel S. GRAHAM to appraise this real estate. October 15, 1831.
Page 55: At their request, William A. BULLOCK was appointed the guardian of
Martha Ann and Benjamin Halifax BOOKER, minor heirs of Hallifax BOOKER,
deceased. Oct. 15, 1831.
Page 56: The sale bill entered here for the personal property of John
RANDALL deceased. Oct. 16, 1831.
Page 58: Mary BARNUM admx. of the estate of Barna BARNUM deceased filed in
court an inventory and appraisement of Barna's personal property which was
the usual household and farm items found on a farm. Its sale bill was also
filed. Oct. 16, 1831.
Page 66: Richard STOTT adm. of the estate of James STOTT dec. reported that
a judgment against James by John DUGAN dated 1820 had come to his attention
which would nullify the sale of James' real estate previously reported.

interest of Cynthia and Mary Jane SHELLEDAY in real estate in Jennings Co.

Robert RUSSELL dec. were ordered to appear at the next term of court and
make settlement of Robert's estate. Mar. 8, 1832.

Page 76: The adm. of the estate of Joseph HARTWELL dec. reported that the
proceeds of the personal property was insufficient to pay the debts of the
estate and petitioned the court to sell Joseph's real estate, with a mill
seat thereon which had been sold to Thomas STONE by Joseph before his
death. Thomas STONE had not completed payment and the adm. wanted to sell
the real estate and mill seat. May 14, 1832.
Page 77: Major KENDRICKS and wife Wealthy, Henry WARREN and wife Laura,
Willard W. PAUL and wife Cynthia, Stephen P. SKINNER and wife Clarissa,
Alanson ANDREWS as guardian of Alanson and Riley HARTWELL, idiots and heirs
of Joseph HARTWELL, dec., and Thomas STONE were to appear before the judge
of the court and show cause why the real estate of Joseph HARTWELL, dec.,
should not be sold. May 14, 1832.
Page 78: On the motion of Joseph MOSBY or MOSLEY, John BONER was to appear
before the court and explain why he should not settle the estate of Gilbert
SUTFIN deceased. May 14, 1832.
Page 78: Euphame BALDWIN WELLS of Lewis County, New York, acknowledged her

Page 84: Isaac HALL, Lemuel WELLS and Abraham WALTON filed their appraisal
of the real estate of William RUSSELL deceased. This real estate was
William's portion of the real estate of Robert RUSSELL, dec., and the court
ordered it to be sold. Aug. 15, 1832.
Page 85: The will of Halifax BOOKER was brought into court and proven Nov.
12, 1824 in the office of the County Clerk. James STOTT, John VAWTER and
John BUTLER were named executors in the will. John VAWTER filed a report as
an executor. Aug. 15, 1832.
Page 89: The adm. of the estate of Joseph HARTWELL, dec., petitioned the
court to sell Joseph's real estate. As certain heirs of Joseph were
non-residents of Indiana a notice of the sale was to be placed in the
Indiana Republican at Madison, Indiana. The heirs were listed as: Major
KENDRICK and wife, Wealthy, late Wealthy HARTWELL, Henry WARREN and wife,
Laura, Alanson ANDREWS, the gdn. for the sale of Alanson and Riley
HARTWELL, minors. Thomas STONE held a title bond for the land to be sold.
Also heirs Stephen P. SKINNER and wife Clarissa and William W. PAUL and
wife Cynthia. Aug. 15, 1832.
Page 90: Richard STOTT filed a report as the guardian of the minor heirs of
William KENYON deceased. Money was listed received from Alvin BROOKING adm.
of William's estate in Kentucky and a sum was paid John EDWARDS for
boarding Robert, James M., Elizabeth, Milton D. and William KENYON for 1828
and a sum was paid for boarding Elizabeth, Milton D. and William in 1829
and for Milton D. and William in 1830. Aug. 15, 1832.

error the executors had paid more over to the heirs than they had coming.

dec. and stated that he had paid the widow Katharine her one third part of
the estate. Nov. 13, 1832.
Page 98: Seth E. CHACE was confirmed as adm. of the estate of Asa CHACE
dec. granted by the court in vacation. He filed in court an inventory of
the personal property of Asa which was the usual household and farm items
and had been appraised by James SHIELDS and William C. BRAMWELL. Sylvia was
listed as Asa's widow. Feb. 11. 1833.
Page 102: Thomas HILL, Jr., was confirmed as adm. of the estate of John
HILL deceased which had been granted by the court in vacation Oct. 11,
1832. He filed in court an inventory of the personal property which
consisted of 10 barrels of corn and some promissory notes. Feb. 11, 1833.
Page 103: Thomas HILL, Jr., was confirmed as adm. of the estate of Green
HILL deceased granted him by the court in vacation Oct. 11, 1832. He filed
in court an inventory of the personal property which consisted of a mare, a
cow, watch, clock, 2 books, razor, music box and some small promissory
notes. Feb. 11. 1833.
Page 105: Andrew WILSON was confirmed as adm. of the estate of John BRIDGES
dec. granted him by the court in vacation Dec. 4, 1832. He filed in court
an inventory of the personal property which included a yoke of oxen, two
bee stands, 22 weaver's spools, a rifle and musket and the usual items
found on a farm. A list of property retained by the widow was listed here
but not her name. Feb. 11, 1833.
Page 111: The adm. reported that he had sold the real estate of Joseph
HARTWELL dec. to Richard MEEK. Feb. 11.
Page 113: John BONER filed a report as the guardian of Sally SUTFIN a minor
listing a sum paid Joseph MOSLY for her support. Feb. 11. 1833.
Page 113: Isaac THIXTON who had been duly appointed adm. of the estate of
Moses NEALE dec. filed in court an inventory of his personal property which
was a small amount of household and farm items and included two deerskins.
The pers. prop. had been appraised by Booth THOMAS and John DENSLOW. All of
the personal property was handed over to the widow Keziah. Feb. 12.

John RANDALL dec. Feb. 12, 1833.
Page 116: William MEEK was confirmed as adm. of the estate of James HOUSE
deceased granted Dec. 31, 1832 by the court in vacation. Feb. 12, 1833.
Page 117: Mary BARNUM filed a report as admx. of the estate of Barna BARNUM
dec. and stated that the sale of the personal property did not bring in
enough to pay the debts of the estate and asked the court for permission to
publish fact in a local paper according to law. Feb. 12, 1833.

Giles W. SPAULDING dec. May 13, 1833.
Page 120: George McCONNELL was confirmed as adm. of the estate of Asa
McCONNELL dec. granted him Feb. 18, 1833 by the court in vacation. May 13,

Page 121: Lucy TOBY and Nathaniel TOBY were confirmed as adms. of the
estate of Samuel TOBY dec. granted them March 9, 1833 by the court in
vacation. May 13, 1833.
Page 122: George McCONNEL filed in court an inventory of the personal
property of Asa McCONNELL dec. which consisted of a colt, a watch, a trunk
and two promissory notes. May 13, 1833.
Page 123: William SANFORD adm. filed a report of the estate of Benjamin W.
CLARK dec. which included a sum paid William for boarding Orlando and
Cynthia CLARK. May 14.
Page 124: The adm. of the estate of Joseph HARTWELL dec. reported that the
debts of the estate were greater than the assets and he was to advertise
this fact in the Indiana Republican at Madison, Indiana. May 14, 1833.
Page 126: The adm. of the above estate paid into court the residue of the
estate which was paid pro rata to the creditors. Aug. 12, 1833.
Page 128: The adm. filed a report in court concerning the estate of John
RANDALL dec. Mary RENFROW received the largest payment by the adm. Aug. 12,

vacation. John S. TORBETT app. executor by Darby's will declined to act as
executor and Sally McGANNON, Darby's wife was deceased. The inventory of
Darby's personal property and real estate was filed in court and included
80 acres of land, 3 spinning wheels and the usual household and farm items.
It was appraised by Chesley WOODWARD and William WALKER, Jr. The farmland
was purchased by Alexander McGANNON. Nov. 11, 1833.

Page 153: The will of Lucy STOTTS dec. was here entered. It was dated Apr.
19, 1833 and recorded Feb. 19, 1834. She mentioned her mother, Phoebe
STOTT, her sister, Zerelda H. STOTT and app. her mother her executrix. The
will was witnessed by Richard STOTT and William CLINTON. Feb. 19, 1834.
Page 154: Andrew WILSON filed a report as adm. of the estate of John
BRIDGES deceased. May 12, 1834.
Page 155: Thomas HILL, Jr., made final settlement as adm. of the estate of
John HILL dec. Sums were paid Betsy Ann and Allen HILL. May 12, 1834.
Page 156: Thomas HILL, Jr., made settlement as the gdn. of Calda ADAMS now
Calada GRAHAM and Thomas listed a sum paid Mary ADAMS for the support of

Page 157: The will of George MOORE, dec. was filed in court and proven. It
was dated Aug. 23, 1832 and recorded May 12, 1834. He mentioned that he was
the eldest son of Benjamin MOORE deceased, late of Shelby Co., Kentucky.
His mother, Mary MOORE, "my brothers and sisters," my sister's son, George
M. GASAWAY" and appointed his mother executrix of his will. The will was
