Just a comment-
*Anyone* who takes the time to transcribe "Public" Records can use them as
they wish and have every legal right share them with who they want - which
includes online to the genealogy community. Thank You Again, Jefe!!! Your
hard work in transscribing the Jennings County Probate Records and generous
heart in sharing your work free here online, is a tremendous gift to all of
us.
However, I don't think that Jonathan Loppnow insinuated that because "Mr.
Holmes" had transcribed these same public records (and many more) and has
put his transcriptions in book form for profit - that only Mr. Holmes has
the rights to these records. I think Jonathan was just letting everyone know
the Mr Holmes has many records in book form, that can be purchased, should
anyone want to buy them. And -We should be very grateful to Mr. Holms for
all the hard work he has done and the expense he has gone to, to put all
these records into books - for all us researchers that can't travel to all
these counties and do the "hard" work, ourselves.
Just my opinion.

Jonathan;
Am I reading this right that someone, "Mr. Holmes" has transcribed the
microfilm and is charging for the books made from those transcripts. I
also seem
to be seeing that it is either improper or illegal to put these
transcriptions on the Web? Why? In many cases it is not possible for
people to
travel to
distant areas and I can understand those that do not have Web access
wanting to
purchase such books but, gee whiz, aren't these public records.
If they
are
not available on line what is wrong with putting them on a web site,
or is
it
just because someone other than the person who did the transcribing
is
doing it?
As you can see I am not a legal genius but I don't like paying
for public
records from private parties. I have paid to get photo copies of documents
related to my family but that was from country offices. They charge for
pretty
much
everything. I believe in free genealogy access. Family treemaker and
the
other
sites tend to irritate me because they want to charge for everything.
Do
we
have people writing books that cannot be copied then charging for
the
information?
