Ma,
I share your opinion.
I too have encountered numerous transcription errors on Ancestry and I
have posted corrections for many of them. And, every now and then, I get
a nice Thank You from Ancestry for my postings.
While I wish they would/could update the transcriptions, they will at
least post the comments which have been sent it. But you can still only
read them if you finally locate the page with the original entry! I do
hope that the corrections that are submitted are entered into their
system in some manner such that persons searching for someone whose name
has been incorrectly transcribed can actually locate the person.
I have been greatly disturbed to end up finding out that an enumerator
only entered initials, or entered middle or nick names! You end up
searching for variations of the spelling of a name instead of ONLY their
given name. (:<((
I still am searching for some persons who had not moved but could not be
found in the index by their correct name.

I don't expect the large sites like Ancestry to give out

free.
They do give some. They do have a lot of expenses for finding and
posting their information. I have no problem in making corrections to
their site. Some of the census material was really bad at first. You
have to "do" genealogy to know the tricks, right? I have done my best
to leave a clearer path for those that come behind me. I don't regret it
one bit.
