From what I have seen the hospitals for the insane were used as
warehouses
for people with disabilities, that made caring for them difficult.
These seemed
to range from physical to mental. My birth mother spent a number of years at
Richmond State, for what is now called Postpartum depression. She was
finally released but not before being sterilized and receiving shock treatments
that wiped out part of her memory. Her children were either adopted out or moved
out of state and she did not see them till many years later. I was adopted
my brother was told she was dead.
