My father (who had the responsibility for the burial of Thomas Jefferson
Coatney) told me that TJC became a recluse and did not trust anyone. He
built a cabin with a double floor as he feared someone was out to "get" him.
He hand made a knife that is as long as a sword and carried it with him. I
have this knife sitting on my desk as I write this. I have made attempts to
retrieve his records from Madison with no success. I fully believe were he
alive today with modern medications he would be a productive society member.
Below are links to two additional letters about his capture.

He certainly did not "sound" a bit insane, most likely some
incurable
illness. My great grandmother Eliza Ann (Keith) Waughtel died at the
Hospital for Insane in Indianapolis 1889 due to phthisis, and that
certainly
was not "insanity".
