For those who have not been to the Jefferson County courthouse since the addition of new
offices and realignment of some space in the Old courthouse, I'd like to give a
report.
Marriages and will books have been left in a small room next to the circuit court
clerk's office. I do not know if this office is closed before and after elections, as
had been the practice for many years.
However, the handling of other records has been a step back. No provision was made for
housing court records in a way that they are easily accessible.
Probate records, civil and criminal court records have all been placed in the basement and
there is no plan to relocate them. They are accessible for research only on request.
Because there are records in the basement that are required to be kept confidential by
law, I had to get an employee from the circuit court office who willing to sit in the
basement while I was researching.
I have been disappointed that a county that places so much emphasis on history failed in
this instance
