The Jeff. Co. Court House was closed in May when I visited. The offices are
scattered around town. The County Clerk's office where the Marriage records
are found is located on Jefferson Street across from the Court House. The
County Recorder with Deed records is on East Main Street between Jefferson
and Mulberry Sts.
You definitely should visit the county Historical Society's genealogy
collection. It's next to the old train depot on West First Street. The
genealogy staff are there on Wednesdays and are very helpful.
The Madison - Jeff. County Public Library at corner of Elm St. and West Main
has many books and microfilms -- old newspapers on microfilm, obituaries,
etc. The genealogy librarian is Janice Barnes. Not sure when she is on duty
but you will want to check at the Library. If possible, go there when she
is on duty.
Those are some tips. Let me know if you have other questions.

Subject: [INJEFFER] research trip help?
Planning a research trip to Madison in early July. What are the best
repositories to go to? What is the status of courthouse materials. This
will
be my first on-site research trip to Madison, so will want to check deeds,
cemeteries, church records, births, marriages, i.e. all that I can in my
4 -5 days.
any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks.
