The courthouse books are still in cold storage since the fire. Nothing
is available at the courthouse, which is has been closed since the
fire of May 20, 2009. The library has posted transcriptions of a lot of
records (marriages, the most thorough), But I'd check everything
against the original. The library marriage transcriptions are not as
accurate as others that have been previously published. Depending on
the church, some are available on the Madison-Jefferson County Public
Library History Rescue section.

Many of the DAR cemetery transcriptions of 1941 are online at
www.myindianahome.com Remember that they were published in 1941 but
taken years earlier. Most cemeteries on the eastern part of the county
have been resurveyed and are posted on this site. Some major cemeteries
on the Library site include St. Patrick's and a cemetery records (but
not tombstone transcriptions) of fairmount. There are some other
transcriptions that are more up to date in the library.
The library has microfilm of deeds, including grantee and grantor
indexes and deed books. I forget where they end. It also has marriage
record micofilms--most of these are transcribed and on the library site
all the way to 1965
The library has a number of Microfilmed church records. While these are
on the library web page, I advise checking them because these
transcriptions are not thorough. They list members shown on lists in
church books, but do not catch many members who were admitted or
dismissed in minutes, but who might not have made one of a church's
periodic lists.
Original birth records are at the health department, which I believe is
on the Madison hilltop and, thus were not subject to damage by the
courthouse fire.
There are a lot of records at the Jefferson County Historical Society,
but its hours are limited. They are open Wednesday afternoon
officially, but the staff tends to show up other days.

Subject: [INJEFFER] research trip help?
Planning a research trip to Madison in early July. What are the best
repositories to go to? What is the status of courthouse materials.
This will
be my first on-site research trip to Madison, so will want to check
deeds,
cemeteries, church records, births, marriages, i.e. all that I can in
my 4 -5
days.
any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks.
