MrBill:
I started school at North Madison in 1937 so I know there was a North
Madison back then. However, it was not incorporated (no town board or
mayor
or police dept, etc.) as was Madison. During the 1950 or 1960s, the
Indiana
State Legislature passed a law prohibiting the incorporation of
towns/cities
if there was already an incorporated town/city within some predetermined
distance. Thus, by the time sufficient population growth and tax base
came
to "the hill" to enable North Madison to incorporate, it was illegal to
do
so. By default, Madison annexed "the hill".
Yes, many cemeteries were relocated to "the hill" when the Jefferson
Proving
Ground was built. My Jines ancestors presumably were moved from the
original Marble Hill and my Ritchey and Johnson ancestors were presumably
moved from the original Fairmont. I say presumably because my parents,
aunts, and uncles told me that contents of graves a generation or two
back
were not moved -- only the headstones were moved. For example, my Mother
and her sister were convinced that their Mother was still in the original
Marble Hill inside the Proving Ground. During WWII they could not visit
her
gravesite -- which they lamented.
