The Jefferson County Historical Society has the potential of putting tax
lists for the county on CD for 1827, 1828, 1831, and 1833, and for the town
of Madison for 1829. I indicated that i would test the waters to see if
there's enough interest to be worth the effort. These lists, still in the
auditors office, show names by township, acres owned, legal description,
quality of the land (first, second or third-rate) Also number of horses,
owen, carriages, gold and silver watches. (Most farmers did not have 2-wheel,
4-wheel carriages or watches.) And tax paid. Many also shows polls (usually
one) which is single men over the age of 21 who have no taxable proprty. This
picks up a lot of single men who might have been living in a father's
household.
