I hope visitors to the Jefferson and Switzerland County GenWeb pages have
found my essays as part of the Online Genealogical Workshop useful. I plan to
continue writing these and have several ideas. However, visitors will notice
none have been posted since August. Fortunately, my activities have been
curtailed more by work--trying to get a magazine published while losing three
days that we couldn't into our building--than by disaster.
My office in Manhattan is 20 block from the World Trade Center. Suffice it to
say, life has been quite a bit different here and genealogy has taken a bit
of a back seat to everything. For example, Friday morning as I started to
cross the street to my office building, two bomb squad vans, sirens and
flashing, headed down the street. We are across the street from a federal
building and we can smell the fires at the WTC that are still burning. It
seems to make everything just a bit harder and leaves less spare time for
family history.
My wife is leaving for France Tuesday, my daughter and I the 21st. These
things have also gotten in the way of writing. We're keeping our fingers
crossed, trying to calm our emotions (still a bigger chance of being hit by a
car on the way to work than getting hijacked) I hope to resume in December.
