Canaan elementary school is still in existence. It has always been a small
school.

I would certainly like to have an attachment of an early school in
Jefferson
County. does anyone know if there are any sort of records of teachers in
Jefferson County in the mid-1800s?
Our g-grandmother, Mizella Hall (Hall) was said to have been a teacher in
the
1850s-60s. We think that they lived near Canaan at the time. We have
always
wondered if a lot of schools and records fell victim to the development of
the proving Grounds. Jim Patrick >>
I would think if there had been any schools in the area of the Proving Grounds
the records would be send to the main school administration offoce in
Jefferson Co.
and/or any town records would be sent to the court house and/or the Public
Library.
Have you tried the Library in Madison? They have much in way of old photos,
newspapers and news articles and scores of other items to numerous to
mention. The Jefferson Co web site also has a picture section of old
pictures and could have a photo of a school or two. You could also put a
querie in the list of anyone that has old pictures of the area to share,
which if anyone does it would be nice.
For copies of old pictures of the area I would be willing to pay the cost of
copies if need be as I research Jefferson Co. IN myself from 1811 on family
names of BURTON, TAGUE, LEE, RISK, REA, ALCORN/ALLCORN/ALCORNE,VAN METER.
This was the county that my George Burton m.to Rebecca Lee Burton settled
from his trek from PA or VA across KY settling in Jefferson Co. IN, he also
was in the town of Canaan.
I hope I have given you and idea or two Jim. Here's hoping that my querie
can help us both in old pics..........Beej in AZ
