I asked my dad about the button factory and he said definately did
exist. He was born and raised in Madison. He said it was on Poplar St
about a half block from the river. they made buttons out of the mussle
(don't know if that's the correct spelling) shells that came from the
river. I'm afraid dad isn't old enough to answer the questions about
civil war tho!! :-)

My great grandmother Philinda Katherine Montgomery born in 1849 in Republic,
Jefferson Co. Ind.I am curious if this is part of Madison where she married
John Huse Hardenbrook or a seperate town. She worked in a button factory in
Madison. Dis such a factory exist there? She told stories of beautiful
buttons to my mom. Also during civil war time were there any hospitals in
Madison? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Elaine s88897(a)aol.com
