Hello;
I noticed the discussion on Wilson and Cloyer and thought I would post some
additional info and query.
Per the Indiananpolis Star October 4,1931 'Indiana Genealogy' column entry
#160:
"Baxter-James (146) James Baxter, born June 6, 1769, died Aug. 31, 182(3 or 8
I have a poor copy) and his wife Mary Tudor, a distant relative of the famous
Mary Tudor. James Baxter was born near the village of Gatheneysay, Tyrone,
Ireland, of Scotch parents. He came to thsi country and settlein what now is
Carlisle, Pa. He brought with him his brother Daniel, who after two years
returned to North Ireland and brought back his father and mother. Ten days
after landing they developed cholera and died and were buried in "Apple Pie"
Center, N.J. James married Rebecca Riddle in Carlisle, Pa., born Nov 24,
1765, died March 5, 1859. They were buried in Craig Cemetery in Jefferson
County, Indiana. Rebecca Riddle had a brother, John who was captured by the
Indians and remained a captive for twenty years, but at age 23 was returned
to civilization. Rebecca Riddle's father was married twice and had by (1)
marriage, John, Rebecca and Susan, a half brother, Jonathan was blind in one
eye. Susan married Nathaiel Wilson and they were parents of Ann, Mary,
Susan, Nathaiel Jr., William and James. The daugther, Susan married Daniel
Baxter, born Nov. 24, 1794. Mary married Dr. Joseph Steele; Ann married
Hexekiah F. Patto (possible typo for Patton ?) The Alonzo H. Baxter
mentioned in Answer 146 to this query, born Aug. 31, 1815 married Elizabeth,
the daughter of James Robinson and wife, Mary Barnum, daughter of Capt.
Daniel Haines and Mary Hanines, born Feb. 14, 1813, died Jue 27, 1852. Julia
A Haines, ..." It continues but does not reference family names you were
discussing. Another source that I cannot locate at the moment indicated that
the Riddle sisters were also from the same village.
My point of query is: Who were the parents of Mary Jane Cloyer.
People with the name of Cloyer in the area at the time were Warden Cloyer
(~1817-?)who married 19 Feb 1837 Elizabeth Laughridge/Loughridge/Lockridge
(~1817-?)
I believe that Warden was son of Henry Cloyer (1744-12 Feb 1821) a veteran of
the Am. Rev. per the benefit record.
My grandmother recalled that the name while spelled "Cloyer" was pronounced
"Colyer" or kinda like "Claw-the-air" making me think it was a pioneer
spelling of Collier or Clothier.
Another issue of that column dated September, 13, 1931 in the midst of entry
145 on Colliers mentions that 2 of the 3 John Colliers who were born in VA
and all then became pioneers in KY(Rockcastle, Lincoln and Madison Counties)
died there in KY and the thrid came to Indiana. Later in the article it
references John Jr., born July 4, 1782, served in war of 1812 fromKentucky,
married Susanna Graves. He spelled his name Colyer. Later it lists Charles
Colyer, born Virginian in 1787, died in Kentucky and had three sons and five
daughters. (8 and 9 )(twins)Dorcas, born 1790, the twin died in infancy.
Dorcas married a Renfro and had a daughter Susan. (10)Nancy born 1798. died
in Indiana in 1863; married Samuel Close of Kentucky. They settled in
Indiana. (11)Susan, born in Kentucky, 1804, died in Kentucky about 1881:
married Lewis Butcher, born in Virginia. The article continues and has more
info. on the descendants of the daughters, but not on the sons.
Does anyone have verification as to the parents of Mary Jane Cloyer? Mary
Jane and Jonathon W. Wilson are the parents of my great grandmother, Susan
Ida Wilson(1872-1930).
Sorry to quote so much of the articles.
