Rex, thank you for your help, and the information. How do you base your research charges?
By the hour plus expenses? I am able to transcribe documents myself, but I am caring for
my sick husband and not able to go out, at this time, to do any field work. If you were
to locate the documents for me, and copy them, how much would you charge? The names I am
interested in right now are George Sylvester Heavilin - my great-grandfather - and his
father, Jacob Briggs Heavilin. But, documents with any other Heavilin name would be of
interest to me, as well, as would any Haviland documents that contain information about
where the families originated from. I am trying to figure out how the Heavilin and
Haviland cousins connect. We know they DO, by DNA, but not HOW they connect.)
thank you again,
Marilyn Current

Hi Marilyn. You can easily find the address of the Jay County Courthouse
online. The Jay County Historical Society has a webpage at
www.jaycountyhistory.org
The Clerk's Office will not do research. You will either need to go to the
Courthouse and search those records yourself; or find someone else to do
so; such as a profession researcher (I research professionally myself).
Best of luck in your search.

Thank you Rex,
So, can you give me an address for the Jay County Clerk's office, as well
as the Jay County/Historical Society, or any other contact information
(hours of operation, etc.)? Do either one have a website? I am really new
at researching in Jay County!
thanks
Marilyn

Hi Marilyn. Lawsuits, such as the one you mention; would be found at the
Jay County Clerk's Office. There are some Index books to those; and they
are a bit difficult to understand. However; they are certainly there and
available to search. once found in a index book; those original cases are
available there.
Marriage Records and Will Books will also be found at the Clerk's Office.
Deed records are located at the Recorder's Office in the Court House. The
Old, original probate records are available at the Jay County
Historical/Genealogical Society. They also have many books of transcribed
records there.
Hope that helps.
