Hi all. I have just recently started a new book. This one is going to be my best piece
of work. I am typing clippings from the old Jay Co. newspapers, which include obits,
marriage notices, murders, suicides, who visited who, buggy accidents, house fires, who
was sick, etc. Many, many, clippings will be included. These clippings not only contain
tons of genealogy value, but are also extremely intersting. They provide some real insite
as to how are ancestors here in Jay County lived. I am currently working on clippings
from the 1870's. From time to time I will probably post a clipping to the list such
as this one below which I came accross today. I will, of course, let everyone know when
the first book is done.
Briant is a small village, situated in Bearcreek township, on the Cincinnati, Richmond
& Ft. Wayne Railroad, six miles north of Portland. The ground on which the burg now
stands was cultivated last season by those who laid out the town plat, and as evidence of
the rapid growth of the place there can be found at this time, one drug store, by Dr. B.
R. Freeman; one dry goods store, by J. G. Martin; one saloon, Ira Watson; one sawmill, by
Thomas Glenn; and one blacksmith shop, by A. Votaw. These are all in Successful
operation, and there are several other business houses in course of erection at this time.
From the appearance of things about this little town, it bids fair to become one of some
importance at no distant day.
