Hi all. As promised, here's another article from the Portland Commercial 8 Sept.
1887. This was another speaker at the Old Settlers meeting that year.
Joseph Carl
He said , in looking over the audience, he saw so many older than he, that he thought they
were really the ones who should lead off in speaking; but as he had been called out, would
speak a little while. After he came to Jay County, he hunted both turkey and deer, and it
appeared as though there was not a stick amiss in the forests. While the old settlers
were passing off the shores of time, slowly but surely, the young and rising generation
was pressing forward, making rapid and valueable improvements. In the pioneer life, there
were always some to lead on - go farther than others - and that those have opened up the
country, and now everyone can fuguratively "sit under his own vine and fig
tree". Many children cannot appreciate the many advantages and blessings they now
enjoy, compared with the trials and disadvantages through which the pioneers passed, as
many of them were too young when their parents died to hear and remember the story as told
to them. When he looked!
back 25 or 30 years, and compared the condition of the country then with the present, it
seemed as though the improvements and developments that had been made were scarcely real.
Only two or three years ago people hadn't thought of gas - natural gas - but now, in
many places, they need neither wood or coal for fuel, or oil for light, having plenty of
natural gas, and for almost nothing.
Hope you enjoyed todays little trip down History lane. Just think.... this guy thought
that the children back then didn't appreciate the advantages and blessings they had!
