HI, I some time ago indexed the 1870 census for Jay County. The name of
Mary McCarty, does not appear there.
There is a Moses McCarty, age 50, born in Ohio, living in madison Twp. and a
woman named Elizabeth, 32, born in Ohio, and a girl, Laura A., 2, born in
Ohio in the same household.
There is another McCarty family living in Knox Twp.
Charles, 34, Rachel P., 28, Glenna, 2, and Ella 1.
There also several McCartney's living in Pike and Jefferson Twp.
Some the early records for Jay co. may also be found in Allen County. Until
about 1836 Jay County was part Randolph Co. and part Allen Co. The area
the McCarty's lived in would have been Randolph Co. before 1836.

Lor,
I am still researching the family mystery. Our family history tell us that
Mary (Darst) McCarty died in 1859 with most of her children from some sort
of
outbreak. Then her grave shows up with this:
Pleasant Hill Cemetery
McCarty, Mary, Born December 26, 1822, died June 3, 1901, aged 78y 5m 7d.
Then she shows up in a 1860 Jay County, Madison Township census.
So now we are wondering if our gg grandfather Moses McCarty divorced her
and
she did not die when we thought. He remarried Elizabeth Ann Cummins in
1865
in Spencer County, IN. I actually directly descend from his second
marriage.
I would like to find her in other census's after 1860 to establish that she
really did not die until 1901.
