Hi all. As I have been working on the newspaper abstracts, I found some great info on
several people. These were published in the Portland Commercial, Thur., Sept. 9, 1886.
These articles take up most of the front page, under a heading titled "Our
Candidates". Obviously these folks are running for county office. However, as you
will see below, these make fantastic biographies on these folks. There are several which
I will post to the list. Here is the first.
Clerk - George E. Reynolds, of Madison township, stands at the head of the county ticket.
He was the only candidate asking the nomination, and it was given him by acclamation.
From the time he announced his name for office, to the day of the convention, it was
generally conceded that he was the man to defeat W. S. Fleming, the Democratic candidate,
and who is now asking the people, only the fourth time, to elect him Clerk of Jay county.
Mr. Reynolds was born in Carroll county, Ohio, and is 42 years of age. He is
of Scotch-Irish descent, his father, Joseph, coming to this country with his parents, when
a boy, in an American vessel, during the War of 1812. Mr. Reynolds received a fair
education in the common schools, and obtained license to teach; but as he preferred other
business, taught but little. He moved with his parents from Columbus, Ohio, in 1864, and
settled in Madison township, where he has been engaged in farming and trading in stock to
the present time. He was married to Miss Hannah Clough, daughter of Ezekiel Clough, one
of the pioneer settlers of Jay county, May 23, 1865.
He has always voted the Republican ticket, and is well known as an energetic
and honorable business man, kind and generous neighbor, and a citizen that is always ready
to do his duty. He is well qualified for the office, and will make an excellent
official.
