The Portland Commercial, Thur., Sept. 9, 1886
Sheriff - James H. Powers was born in Jefferson township, March 23, 1855. His parents are
pioneer settlers of Jay county, having moved onto the farm on which they now live, in an
early day. James H. received a common education, and taught one term with reasonably fair
success. He then engaged in farming, which he continued to follow until 1880, when he was
employed by the Pan-Handle Railway Co., as freight and passenger agent at Powers. The
duties of the office require accuracy, promptness, honesty, and close attention to
business; but he has been ever faithful and still holds the position, and will continue to
do so until elected by the people, in November, Sheriff of Jay county. His neighbors, --
Democrats and republicans alike - speak well of him, and concede that he is one of the
Powers to be.
