Here's another from the Portland Commercial, Thur., Sept. 9, 1886.
Recorder - J. L. C. McAdams was born in Hamilton county, Ohio, April 12th, 1857. His
father, after spending the larger portion of his means in seaking relief from that
dreadful disease - dyspepsia - died in 1861; and a tricky attorney swindled the widow and
children out of the estate, with the exception of the small pittance of about $400. Then
it was that Joseph, like many other poor orphan boys, "had a hard row to hoe."
He and his older brother, aged respectively, 5 and 8, sawed wood and went to school until
1865, when their mother again married. They then moved onto a large farm, where Joseph
performed all the routine of farm labor - clearing, ditching, chopping, splitting rails
like "honest old Abe," plowing, harvesting, etc. - until he was 19 years old,
notwithstanding he went to school only 3 months out of 12, by close application and hard
study, he was able to obtain his license to teach at the age of 14, but never taught. At
the age of 19, he went to Winchester,!
and studied and practiced dentistry with Dr. Wright. In 1877, he came to Portland and
engaged in the practice of Dentistry. He was married to Miss Emma Johnson in 1881. By
industry and skill, he has become well known as one of the best dentists in eastern
Indiana. He applies himself very closely to business, often opening his office and going
to work at the farmer's popular hour - 4 o'clock - and working until late in the
evening.
He is no politician, and has no special ambition to become one; but at the
earnest solicitation of friends he became a candidate for City Clerk at the spring
election of 1885, and was elected by a large majority. During the past summer his friends
urged him to announce his name for Recorder, and he only consented when they said if he
didn't they would announce it for him unless he positively declined. Under these
circumstances he entered the race. He made no canvass among the delegates for the
nomination; but as he was the choice of the convention he will do all that is honorable to
be elected. He is well known to the people of Jay county generally, and has a large
following in the Democratic party that will support him, because they are his personal
friends, and want an efficient and accommodating public servant. His qualifications are
first class, and he will certainly make an excellent official.
