Hello Ann and everyone !
If you are looking for census assistance from the web page, look here
http://www.rootsweb.com/~injay/jaylook.htm at the volunteer assistance
available. There is alot there for you to access through the voulnteers.
See what sources they have to offer and email them directly. If for some
reason you get bounced email or have a problem let me know. Remeber they
are volunteering thier own time so be fair about what you ask and be
paitient. If any one gets the 1870 census cd and wants to volunteer to do
look-ups from it, please let me know. Lorraine Panozzo has being doing 1870
census look-ups from a paper copy of the Jay County census. I know from
doing the 1850 (paper) and 1860 (cd) look-ups that working from the paper
copy is much more work. Plus, with the cd, you can be of more help to
people as sometimes a family has moved to a different county. The state
census on cd has been a very useful tool for me to help others.
Another option you might try if you are looking for local resources is to
contact the Jay County Genealogy Society. They are a very active society
and have access to many things not on the web page. Plus, they are there in
town and have access to all the local people who may still be there and
descend from your lines. Membership in the society is $10.00 and they will
answer reasonable queries from members. They have a lot of stuff on hand and
they just receievd the old probate records from the court house which they
are working on indexing. They would love new members, but will also do
look-ups for non-members for a fee.
Go here
http://www.rootsweb.com/~injay/jaygene.htm to read about them and
contact them directly.
Cheers!
Amy
