WOW! I am very very pleased and excited to announce that this morning at
11:30 am, a DATABASE containing
over 19,000 JAY COUNTY CEMETARY INSCRIPTIONS was uploaded to the JAY COUNTY
WEB SITE. This represents
all known cemetary transcritpions in Jay County.
May I take a moment to say the following: this project represents an
incredible amount of work and effort on the
part of many volunteers. I want to publicly thank them all. Thier names are
listed on the welcome page to the database. They unselfishly donated
thier time to bring this tool to all researchers!
I also want to publicly acknowledge the efforts of Eloine Chesnut, who
ended up with the lion's share of the work in
compiling all this information. She has contributed so much to the Jay
County Genealogy web site and on-line genealogy that
its hard to thank her enough.
As well, I want to thank the Jay County Genealogy Society for both thier
efforts in conducting the transcriptions project in the
first place (can you imagine the work that went into that!) and in donating
this information to the web site. They are a wonderfully
active society, truly dedicated to the preservation of genealogical
information.
NOW THEN: -! This project is not yet entirely completed. As phase II to
this project, we will be cross-referencing this data
base with a data base of cemetary locations in Jay County. That will come
at a later date: I wanted to get the core records up as
fast as possible.
ONE MORE THING: The Jay County Genealogy Society now houses many wills and
probate records.
They have indexed thier records and have provided me with a copy of this
index. This index must be transcribed
from its current text form into some sort of data base for it to be
searchable by name, like this cemetary index.
When that is completed, researchers will be able to see on line whether or
not the Jay County Genealogy Society has records
of interest to them, and will be able to request copies for a small fee to
cover photocopying etc. This is our
next project. Perhaps if some of you find information of interest in this
cemetary data base, you would consider
volunteering to help put some of this information into the proper format.
Please let me know if you are able to
volunteer.
FINALLY: this project is why some other updates have been slower in coming.
Please be paitient!
