Is there any one out there who could see if there are obituaries for
these two buried in Jay County? All I have is the year.

I was trying to find this cemetery at the USGS GNIS Map Server... in Jay
County... This source lists it in Adams County.
Now I have it! Can someone give me driving directions to it? Coming from
Celina, Ohio...

Hello Rex,
It seems to me that someone has moved the township line. If the
Daugherty cemetery is in Bearcreek township that would have had to be
done.
I am not sure what the township description is for but the Daugherty
cemetery is definitely in Wabash Township and has been since I have
known of
it. You were correct in the information you gave. If you need proof
let me
know. The cemetery is just across the Township line and the Jay Adams

Hi Amy --
I have Abia's father and mother as John S. Skinner and Catherine. Her
last name is questionable.
Abia's wife's name was Mary Hooper. I have no parents for her yet.
These are the children that I have for John and Catherine:
Salathiel D. Skinner b. Apr 1819 d. 11 May 1819
Nathaniel E. Skinner b. 1821 d. 5 Jul 1858 mar. Elizabeth Crosskey
Lydia Skinner b. 1826 mar. Jacob Hooper
Salathiel Skinner b. 1829 d. 17 Dec 1893 mar. Amaretta Sherman
Elsie Dana (Aladania) Skinner b. 1832
Abia Albin Skinner b. 19 Jan 1833 d. 3 Sep 1894 mar. Mary A. Hooper
As you can see, our notes do not jive.
In the 1860 Census of Jay County, IN, John S. Skinner is listed as
living in the same household as Abia.
He was 75 years old at this time. Familysearch.org also lists him as Abia's
father (I know a lot of their info
is not proved, though).
I think the Skinners delighted on naming their families with the same
names -- for example, Samuel Skinner.

I am also copying (part of this) to Jay Co., IN, website -INJAY@rootsweb - as
Betsy's son, Wiley CLARK was b. there. He was kin thru Clarks to a lot of

I will try to get Wateman HASTINGS/Mary Eleanor ('Ellender') COLLINS

This from the 1864 History of Jay County...
During 1835 many persons visited the county and selected land. Every
settler's cabin was crowded with travelers. Early in the spring, William
and Uriah Chapman came out and camped near by the spring, where James
Whiteman now lives, in Bear Creek Township. Two corners of a blanket
fastened to the ground, the other two tied up with lind bark, in a
slanting direction, served for their camp, in front of which they
kindled a fire. On the 22nd of April, William, with his family and
father-in-law, George Lipps, arrived on the spot where he lived until
his death, February 15th, 1862. He first built a shed, under which they
lived, cooking by a log-heap, for two months, until compelled to build a
cabin for protection against the mosquitoes. Like many others, Uriah
Chapman had to travel by night in great haste to Fort Wayne to save
their land from speculators. For several seasons Mr. Chapman did little
besides provide for travelers. About half of his time was occupied in
hunting to get meat, and the other half going south for provisions.

Looking at the ages of the children in 1850 and the gap between

William.

In 1842 there was a William Chapman that married Nancy Johnston in Jay
Co. They were married by Silas PINGRY. The Pingry's were from the
Bearcreek township area. In fact, one of the cemeteries my wife and I
photographed was the Pingry Cemetery in Bearcreek township.I see that
WIlliam Jr. was also buried in Daugherty Cemetery, as well as a Nancy
Chapman (probably the wife of William Jr.). So if Uriah and William Jr.
were brothers (and it seems likely), then the fact that William Jr. was
also buried there in Daugherty Cemetery gives evidence that William Sr.
was probably their father. Looking further into this, I see that Uriah
was also buried there.

The Daugherty cemetery is located in Wabash township, very near the Adams Co. line, and also on the border of Bearcreek township. In the 1850 census of Jay Co., there is a William living near Uriah in Bearcreek township. However, this William is only 40 years old, so he is not old enough to be the William who died at age 90 in 1857. However, I would suggest that there is a strong possibility that the 40 year old William is Uriah's brother. He and Uriah were both born in PA. The other William may be their father. Since they apparently lived very close to the Adams Co. line, maybe the elder William was actually in Adams Co. in 1850.

Hi all. Just thought I'd let everyone know that my wife and I started photographing the stones at Hillside/Quaker Cemetery today. This is a very old cemetery. Roughly, about 1,200 burials there. The cemetery is in Penn Township, just on the edge of Pennville. A lot of the early Pennville settlers were buried here. We hope to finish photographing all of the stones there by the weekend.

William McLAUGHLIN was born in Bath county, Virginia, March 23, 1803, and was
a son of Hugh and Jane ( WILEY ) McLAUGHLIN, who later became residents of
Meigs county, Ohio. In this latter county William McLAUGHLIN grew to manhood and
was there married, September 17, 1833, to Rebecca GRAY. Six years later, in
1839, he came over into Indiana with his wife and the three children that
meanwhile had been born to them and settled on an "eighty" he had entered from the
Government in Madison township, this county, establishing his home there in a
rude log cabin, and entered upon the serious task of making a farm out of the
woodland tract. Ten years later, in 1849, he moved with his family to a farm
in section 34 of Noble township and there established the home in which he and
his wife spent the remainder of their lives. He died on July 3, 1872, and his
widow survived until in February, 1881. Of the nine children born to this
pioneer pair the subject of this sketch was the last born. Three of these children
are still 'living, Jacob B. McLAUGHLIN having two brothers, John McLAUGHLIN,
of Portland, and George McLAUGHLIN, of Madison township. Reared on the home
farm in Noble township, Jacob B. McLAUGHLIN supplemented the schooling received
