The Commercial Review - Thursday, Sept. 11, 1907
The funeral of Mrs. William Hawkins was held Sunday afternoon from her residence at Antioch, the interment being in the Antioch Cemetery. Rev. Homer B. Bosworth was the officiating minister. Mrs. Hawkins was well known, and the last sad rites were largely attended. She was a heavy woman, her casket being one of the largest ever brought to this county.
Note: The two obits appeared in the same paper. mlh
The Commercial Review - Thursday, Sept. 11, 1907
Winnie Anne Hawkins, daughter of Miles O. and Elizabeth Long, was born Oct. 4, 1862, and died Sept. 5, 1902, age 39 years, 11 months and 1 day.
She was wed to William Hawkins April 14, 1883. One daughter was born to this union and preceded her in the spirit land.
She united with the Friends Church at Bluff Point at the age of 14 years, and was still a member and supporter of the same at her death.
By her kindly words and actions she won many friends who remain to mourn her loss, but feel she has gained an eternal home at God's right hand.
Death did me short warning give
Therefore be careful how you live.
My weeping friends I left behind,
I had no time to speak my mind.
Funeral was held at the residence Sunday at 2 p.m. conducted by Rev. H.B. Bosworth. Interment at Antioch cemetery.
To those who so kindly assisted us in the sickness and dearth of our beloved wife and daughter we offer our sincere thanks.
William Hawkins
Elizabeth Long
The Commercial Review - Monday, Jan. 24, 1921
Elizabeth Long, 84, passed away Saturday evening at four P.M., at the home of her son-in-law, William Hawkins, three quarters of a mile east of Antioch, following an illness of complications of diseases and infirmities of old age. She was born Nov. 28, 1836, and was at the time of her demise eight-four years, one month and twenty-four days of age. She was a daughter of Lewis and Margaret Winegardner and came with her parents, at the age of one year to this county, where she has been a resident since that time.
Preceding her in death are her husband, Miles Berry Long, who died in 1865 and two daughters, Minnie Ann and Margaret, who died at the age of nine days. She was the last of a family of four children. Her son-in-law, William Hawkins, with whom she had lived for many years, survives.
Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at 10 o'clock from Antioch Church, Rev. J.H. Hall officiating.
Interment was made at Bluff Point Cemetery.

My Dad quoted the following verbatim (sp?) all his life from the time it was
written (when he was abt 15). Calvin P. STONEE wrote it to HCH's sister,
red-haired Floss Naomi HASTINGS, whose fiance Warren McMILLAN of Mercer Co., OH,
died of TB abt. 1910-15, and she never married. Lived with sister Ella HUNTER
State Line, Jay Co., IN, later Ft. Recovery, Mercer Co., OH.
Calvin's brother had also previously tried to date Floss, and was turned
down.

Miss Hastings:
May it not be offending to you
If in this manner I make my debut.
But if it shall be, why then, of course,
You have my permission to forget the source.
For the kindness shown, I thank you heartily
Though the contents were a trifle tartly
--?????-- But my hopes are not a total wreck
Though I know I got it in the neck.
And never discouraged a measly whit
By the contents of the epistle writ
I sue again 'fore 'tis too late
For a date in the Leap Year of 1908
To a lady fair, I do declare
Who hit my brother so fare* and square
If I also meet my 'Waterloo'
Please bear in mind this is for only you.
Through the pyramids of my brain I sought
And procured a few mummified thoughts.
They at least carry my humble thanks
Although they are of the lowest ranks.
Perhaps you think it a clever ruse
I think it only a flimsy excuse.
But if you think it well applied,
By your first decision I will abide.
And I all remembrance will forever sever
[For also remember 'tis now of never]
As leaves of Autumn when a yellow or brown
Are gone forever to their home on the ground.
Or if you think the acquaintance not sufficient
I'll try to show I am quite efficient
To render the substance after reduction
Of an up-to-date formal introduction.
But if perchance you have thought better
And will show your ability by answering this letter
High into the heavens your name I'll shout
If you'll act the affirmative and leave the negative out.
So, hoping to hear from you
'Fore many a moon
I remain, as ever,
Calvin P. Stone
*That's the way it's spelled.

To Mary Lou - Thanks again! I can hardly keep up with all this info!
The 1880 census tells a story about this family - [I'm writing this for my
record ; you could probably care less.] - It tells that
Z. was born OH (Mercer Co,Gibson Tp.- Parents b. DE & MD - which corroborates
my findings.
Minerva b. OH, (Mercer Co.-Wash.Tp.) parents both b. IRE
[Minerva's parents had died 1873 and 1875 leaving sev. orphaned ch.
Minerva being already married but not yet 21 took them in along with, from
time to time, another younger sister, Mary Frances.
MF was prob with another older sis Margaret W. JAMESON, already married to
Hugh Jameson 1880 in Wash Tp. Mercer Co., OH - across the State Line, but Mary
F-- 'Aunt Sis--was living with Minerva when she MF died in 1926. (I was 3 &
remember her.)]
The 3-mo. old Wateman died infcy.
Minerva's younger brothers, Preston & 'Willie' WILEY went to Kansas to work
on building railroad and settled there. [My sole contact slnelson(a)indiana.edu]

Always nice to see a Franklin! Bens mother was by 6x great Aunt from
Nantuckett. Any relations with you or your husband?
Bob
WOW, you are a luv!
Some of the info I had found before; just recently the marriage record, and I
know that must be accurate, because I'm sure my ggrandmother was Leota CHAMP,
but wonder if the 1880 Census with Curtis, parents Wm. and Cordia are from
another family.........it's very close to correct dates, unless Wm. H. BULLOCK
is William Harvey! Cordia could be the same as Cora, I guess, but since I
don't have access to any other records, I think I will pursue the info you've
provided! Let's hope it all comes together!
Looking forward to your other file........love this Internet!
Thank you!

To Mary Lou <hudgo(a)medt.com> & Phyllis (<pjfra klin(a)fwi.com> -
I've highlighted the below from your emails to INJAY re LOYs et al. to keep
it together for my use - Questions also in BOLD for whoever can answer them.
My main question to whichever of you or both has the LOYs in children's
ancestry - Do you have the area of Maryland they came from and their migrations
before arriving in JAY CO. IN?
The state of DElaware was part of MD 1745-1776 (& it was the 'three lower
counties of PA' before that !) See my HASTINGS ancestry below.

are 50+ HASTINGS names in the phone directory of the very small town of

1600s? Or did they float down from New England where there were lots of them
in 1600s. Not on 'Mayflower' though.]
