MURDERED BY A BURGLAR
A Citizen of Seymour, Ind., Shot Down at His Door
[Special to The Republic]
Seymour, Ind., Jan. 1-About four o'clock this morning a burglar entered the
sleeping room of Lucebra W. Marsh, a prominent citizen, and after securing a
valuable gold watch and a considerable sum of money attempted to escape by a
back door. The noise awakened Mr. Marsh, who is a large and powerful man,
and he grappled the burglar just as he was leaving the door. A desperate
struggle, in which the men became entangled in a wire fence, took place in
the yard, and was ended by the burglar shooting his victim through the
heart. Marsh died instantly, and as soon as possible the officers and
citizens organized for pursuit. Bloodhounds were brought from Louisville to
track the murderer and the hope and belief is that he will be caught
tonight. If he is, justice will be summary.
Surrounded and Likely to be Lynched
[Special to The Republic]
Columbus, Ind., Jan. 1-The murderer of L. W. Marsh at Seymour, who is
barefooted, was followed past Azalia and Scipio and tonight at dark was
overtaken and two shots fired at him, but he escaped into a swamp and
thicket twelve miles south of this city between Queensville and
Brewersville, and is surrounded by 100 men.
Your correspondent left Seymour at nine o'clock tonight where an awful mob
of 3,000 to 4,000 people were thronging the streets, eager to lynch the
villain. As soon as it was learned the murderer was surrounded, a special
train was chartered and boarded by 300 citizens under the lead of
ex-Postmaster Mains who hastened to the spot where the murderer was being
held at bay. It is not likely, however, that he can be captured before
daylight when he will probably be hanged to the first tree.
